Sharp differences remained on Wednesday between congressional Republicans and the White House in talks to avert the "fiscal cliff" of steep tax hikes and budget cuts, and negotiators warned the showdown could drag on past Christmas.
A Wall Street Journal-NBC News poll released late on Wednesday, however, held the potential to shake up the stalemate. Three-quarters of those surveyed, including 61 percent of Republicans, said they would accept raising taxes on the wealthy to avoid the so-called cliff, as Democratic President Barack Obama is demanding.
With Republicans in Congress already divided, that rejection by their own supporters of the core demand of Republican House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner could further weaken his position.
Both sides refused to give any ground in public, one day after what Boehner described as a "frank" conversation with President Barack Obama about the remaining hurdles to a deal.

Poll: Nearly 60 Percent Of Republicans Want GOP To Compromise In Fiscal Cliff Deal
Fifty-nine percent of Republicans want GOP leaders in the House and Senate to compromise to reach a deal to avert the fiscal cliff, according to a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll released Wednesday. In April, just 38 percent backed such a compromise

(17,301 posts)Maybe they would cooperate better if you hit them with a few poles.

(16,916 posts)And in the House and Senate would have provided the poll you're hoping for, but nope!
I say let them go on as if they had leverage. Nothing improves our position quite like Republican ignorance of their own weakness.

(16,916 posts)I just don't think you can beat the "stupid" off of these dorks with a pole.
You'll need something with more heft...like a Buick.

PLEASE, stand your ground until the general public FINALLY sees who you REALLY represent in Washington and decides to send you and your party to the dust-bin of history.
Go ahead, make our day!

(38,510 posts)And my fingers crossed. I don't think Social Security and Medicare can survive the kind of "compromise" that even some Democrats are advocating. And I'm sure their recipients won't survive very well.

(38,510 posts)what would be the "conventional wisdom" as to what would be considered "progress" in the Fiscal Bluff talks.

(18,541 posts)I guess 70% of (D)s don't know what's in their own best interest or that we just won an election. Well either that, or it's an NBC/WSJ poll.
this is interesting, coming from the same organization's editorial board that advocated Republican's not to fold, if Obama doesn't give significant cuts in entitlements. Just who are their subscribers, and didn't Krystol just crticize them before that Poll? It is interesting they came out with a Poll supporting their views.

(8,821 posts)Did that polling question ask what kind of a compromise Democrats wanted? Everyone says they want compromise, but to the Republicans that means the President caves on cutting entitlements to the bone. I seriously doubt if that is what many Democrats mean by "compromise."

(43,219 posts)and nothing will. They'll just dig in harder and deeper.
They're posturing for the 2014 midterms already
If Boehner caves, he'll lose the Speakership to a Tea Pottier.
If Boehner stands pat, he'll lose in the polls, and get 2/3 of the
blame for going over the Fiscal Cliff.
If the economy improves just a wee bit and steadily, 2014 will see
Democrats gain 25 seats in the House.
But first, the Tea Party radicals will be allowed to make a display of
themselves.
And the GOP will try to blend all their inconsistent ideas into
a consensus that is appealing to the mainstream.
And the GOP will fail.
I marvel at the divided government the Founding Fathers
gave us. They really did study history, they knew human
nature, they had fled religious and political dictatorships.
Their system is still working.
Now if we could just get some relief at the polls on the
state level.

(8,821 posts)President Obama is clearly winning this one big time. Even Republicans support raising taxes on the wealthiest of Americans, and by a majority of sixty percent! All that is left to see is how many top Republicans, such as Representative Cantor, are so deeply in the pockets of the Koch brothers that they would rather be defeated in 2014 than displease their masters.
This is going to be a very merry Holiday Season for liberals.
