Boehner Tries to Contain Defections on Fiscal Unity

Source: NY Times

Speaker John A. Boehner moved Wednesday to maintain Republican unity on deficit reduction talks as lawmakers on the far right openly chafed at his leadership and some pragmatists pressed for quick accommodation on tax rate increases on the rich.

* * *
With his bargaining position already tenuous, Mr. Boehner needs a unified party behind him if he is to hold out for a conservative deficit deal, leaders told the Republican conference on Wednesday. Concern on his right flank may be keeping him from moving toward a deal. The latest counterproposal from the speaker to the president on Tuesday did not move an inch off his position of $800 billion in revenue increases over 10 years, achieved through an overhaul of the tax code without tax rate increases.

In private talks with the president, Mr. Boehner assured him he would be willing to increase the total amount of tax increases in his offer higher than the $800 billion over 10 years he initially laid out. But he added that such a concession would come only if Mr. Obama significantly increased the amount he is willing to cut in spending, a leadership aide said Wednesday. The speaker said the president’s opening bid on spending cuts was not even large enough to justify the speaker’s $800 billion in revenue increases, the aide said.

A White House official said the president reiterated his request that Mr. Boehner detail what cuts he wants. He still has not.

What do Republicans wants?

Answer: Boehner does not know and is not saying, because short of a total embrace of the Ryan budget, Boehner knows he cannot control his caucas. This is why is running in place and simply repeating, "I want spending cuts like, you know, spending cuts."

The most frustrating thing is that media does not demand Republicans to put up or shut up on spending cuts. Why do Republicans think that Democrats need to be the ones to try to read their mind? Why can't Republicans offering anything more coherent than a two page letter of talking points and platitudes? You rarely see the media holding Republicans accountable.

Finally, the false equivalency is annoying! Both sides are not equally fault. Republicans are almost entirely at fault because (a) they are holding out on tax cuts to the top 2 percent despite the election and public opinion and (b) they lack the courage to state on the record what they want to cut in order to pay for their proposed tax cuts to the rich. Yet, the media insists that BOTH sides are equally fault, which is BS.

but I did hear President Obama lay out Defense cuts on the campaign trail. He said that he was going to pull out of Afghanistan, and cut funding, that Congress proposed, the defense didn't even ask for. He said he would take that money and add it to the deficit, as well as use some to help veterans get job, returning from the Wars. I listened to every speech he gave. I don't know why people got the idea President Obama has not been specific. They probably was listening to those mocking birds in the media too much. He was very specific, and I thought his plans were pretty good. At least it added up better than Romney and Ryan.

He also pointed out how this country got into this mess. The Bush tax cuts, two Wars, and bad decisions in the Banking Industry and Wall Street. It had nothing to do with Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid. In fact Romney and Ryan kept telling bold face lies to old folks, President Obama cut 715 million dollars out of medicare. Even Ryan tried to lie about it in his Debate with vice President Biden by saying the President cut Medicare. Biden even laughed at him. so the media and Boehner must have Romnesia when they debated about those programs or boehner must have been in a bar somewhere when they debated. Now he is claiming, they have some mandate and the President doesn't? Mot only that, the president did discuss Wall Street. The Election is over, it should be end of discussion, but apparently it is not with the Republicans in the house. They need to be repairing their party and get new Policies.

If he gives in too soon, many of his fellow Pubs will try to push himj out of the speakership. I think they're gfoing rto wait until the last possible minute before they admit defeat.

The argument I'd like to see the Dems make is that billions of spending cuts have already taken place...linked to agreements the Dems made with them to increase the spending limits, extend unemployment benefits, and dozens of other give-ins the Pubs forced the Dems to do. At some point they have to face reality and recognize there are some expenses associated with the fed. govt. operations!

Democrats have responded to the Republican lie there has been no cuts, but the media has purposely chosen to ignore the Democrats rebuttal to these lies. I have posted links to transcripts and blog posts documenting the statements of Democrats often offered shortly after a Republican floor speech, but the mainstream media has refused to air such statements. Check out my posts below on Nancy's smackdowns on Republicans.

Nany Pelosi is the House Minority Leader, yet the media would rather cover Lindsey Graham trying to save his ass from a primary challenge.

the same during the campaign, but they must have Romnesia or in league with the Republicans. They were just as suprised with the results of the election as the Republicans were. They missed those unlikely voters too. They don't fool me one bit. The corporations own them too. They think the American people are stupid!

For instance the "Cliff" bill is specific in spelling out that spending cuts should be 50% military and 50% other. So, where are the military spending cuts? The Ryan budget that is the underpinnings of the Boehner proposal calls for spending increases. If there is one thing we have learned from this is that Republicans cannot be trusted. Not a handshake and not a written agreement (bill). So what do you do when a need exists to cobble something together like there is now and one side is unstable and unreliable.
