Michigan House repeals personal property tax
10:40 PM, December 13, 2012
By Kathleen Gray
Free Press Lansing Bureau

LANSING — The personal property tax was repealed Thursday night by the state House of Representatives, giving businesses a $590 million a year tax break.

The bill passed 57-52, a one-vote cushion because bills need 56 votes to pass. The personal property tax, or PPT, is levied against industrial and commercial equipment and furniture. It would begin to be phased out over 10 years beginning in 2013.

There’s widespread agreement that the tax should be eliminated, but local communities fear the loss of the revenue that helps them pay their bills.

“These series of bills are going to impact our communities and there’s no escaping it,” said state Rep. Harold Haugh, D-Roseville.

The Michigan Municipal League and Michigan Association of Counties both oppose the bill because it doesn’t provide for 100% of replacement of the revenues to local communities.

This is exactly what happens when voters elect folks who do not believe in government to run government!

It's been a Teabagger orgy in Lansing all this week during the lame duck session. These folks are fucking nuts!

It's like the Energizer Bunny on meth.

I see no mention of an exemption for home owners.

Does this only apply to businesses ?

If that is the case, this is insanity !!!

I understand now.

The title confused me.

When I hear the phrase personal property I think of homes and land.

This is for business equipment and furniture.

implies that it is a tax on non-commercial property held by individuals, and not companies

And underscores the major differences between the two parties. Elections matter. We will have to live with some of this for 10 years to because of Gerrymandering of districts establish by these same politicians doing this lame duck damage.

in retrospect. I'm very curious myself about the legitimacy of the Tea Party sweep. Were their elections rigged?

He is pissed and not going to take it anymore!! Apparently in recruiting a candidate to run against Snyder and his cabal in the legislature in 2 years. Good on him. Perhaps this law will be undone next year. We will see.

...he was on fire, wasn't he? He was on Jennifer Granholm's show last night on Current, and at the first of the interview he was almost, if not, in tears, but ended up positive and on fire at the end of it. Yeah, tonight's appearance on Ed showed a big uptick in passion since last night. It's not nice to make Michael Moore mad. Yeah, Michael is going to be a force for Snyder & his buddies in the Sate of Michigan to reckon with over the next two years.
Go Michael!

5. Some States Limit Scope Of Lame Duck Sessions
Fri Dec 14, 2012, 03:32 AM
Dec 2012

Those that limit either specify an emergency must exist, which is pretty soft, and some limit the session to individual bill(s) that have to be quantified before the session opens. Michigan is an example of why these changes have been put in place by these States.

of a legislative body, such as Parliament.

In most parliamentary systems, the parliament is dissolved until the election, and the newly elected members take office right away. Generally, the Prime Minister of Great Britain takes office the day after an election.

Likewise, in my hometown, newly elected city commissioners are sworn in the meeting after their election.

the people of Michigan deserve this, but I know from watching Rachel Maddow last night that more Michiganders voted for Democrats than voted for Republicans. Thanks to redistricting, all of the people of Michigan got screwed.

But certainly, every single person not in the top 1% who voted for a Republican deserves this.

20. It's a badly named tax -- it's not about personal property at all

" The personal property tax, or PPT, is levied against industrial and commercial equipment and furniture. It would begin to be phased out over 10 years beginning in 2013."

It was a tax on office furniture and equipment. I do think it's a discouragement to businesses who want to invest in new equipment. Imagine having to pay extra taxes on new computers for your office. Or because you get new chairs for your employees.
