Bobby Jindal, "End Birth Control Politics"

Source: Talking Points Memo

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, a potential 2016 Republican presidential candidate, called for oral contraceptives to be made available over the counter in an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal published Thursday evening.

"As a conservative Republican, I believe that we have been stupid to let the Democrats demagogue the contraceptives issue and pretend, during debates about health-care insurance, that Republicans are somehow against birth control. It's a disingenuous political argument they make."

Allowing birth control to be purchased over the counter would put "purchasing power back in the hands of consumers" and take the issue out of the political arena, Jindal wrote.

I pay way more for my Allegra D now than I ever did when it was prescription only, and I need to take it 365 days a year. Due to debilitating cramps with my natural cycle (so severe I am unable to work or even get out of bed really if I'm not on the pill), there is a chance I may need to be on birth control pills until menopause except for any pregnancies that I have. If the cost goes up the way some other drugs have, I'd be spending a LOT more money just to be able to function.

Insurance doesn't pay for over-the-counter meds.

Jindal isn't being sensible. No, he's being sleazy. Making contraception OTC forces women to pay for it, even if they have insurance.

Fuck him.

I've recently jumped through some paperwork hoops to get OCs for my daughter. She's on CHIP, which in Texas has the same policy with respect to the Pill as Medicaid... OCs are only covered if contraception is not their primary function. It wasn't enough that the prescription explicitly said they weren't for birth control and gave a diagnosis code for what was being treated: the doctor still had to call the insurance company.

If you buy medications OTC, insurance doesn't pay for them. With the ACA, most women are now getting their birth control with no co-pay, hence the freak out by some religious institutions. Make birth control OCA, that problem is solved, and women are now paying thousands of dollars a year, again, to do responsible family planning.

DEMOCRATS are demagoguing on birth control?????

From the mouth of the party that wants to regulate
my bedroom, my choices, my doctor's options, run
Planned Parenthood into financial oblivion, and
hound abortion service providers out of business?

Jindal is so arrogant he can't understand his own party.

Hang it up, Bobby.

But whether BC pills are available RX or OTC would be a medical community decision, not a political one.
