Senators want commission to look at mass shootings

Source: AP

BY BY ANNE FLAHERTY, ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON (AP) — Two senators are calling for a national commission to examine mass shootings in the United States, while a colleague says she’s push to ban the sale of military-style assault weapons.

The proposals are among the first to come from Congress in the wake of Friday’s school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

Sen. Joe Lieberman, a Connecticut independent, tells “Fox News Sunday” that a national commission could be used to scrutinize the nation’s gun laws, mental health system and the role that violent video games and movies might play in shootings. Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois agrees, and says it’s time that the nation reflects in a “thoughtful way.”

Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California tells NBC’s “Meet the Press” that she’ll revive her plan to ban new assault weapons.

I don't think so...and you really want to wait until 2014 for Vicky Kennedy to be elected to the US Senate...that's if she's even thinking about running for the seat!

Bloomberg is too much of a control freak and has his own agenda, it's well known he doesn't believe in the 2nd Amendment...and therefore will not be able to provide an unbiased decision...but I think that's what the anti-gun nuts want...a ringer, someone who they know will call for the banning of all handguns if not all guns!

I think whoever heads it will have to be someone neutral on the issue. Any leaning to either side will make the counter side more likely to reject the findings if it is not to their liking

senseless shootings -- as long as they can have their gun and the possibility of shooting someone themselves?

It is very hard to be neutral about guns.

Gun fanatics need to consult their own common sense and propose some realistic solutions here.

In this case, the mother encouraged her son's interest in guns.

Every gun fanatic should take note of that fact and ask him- or herself what can be done.

Those of us who don't want to be bothered with owning guns quite naturally would just as soon ban all but the most basic hunting rifles. If gun lovers have a different alternative that they think is better, they should suggest it.

Because, if the nation faces any more shootings of this brutality, barbarity, cruelty and hideousness, we will move toward a total ban.

I don't favor a total ban, but it's up to the NRA and its supporters to propose a workable solution short of that.

Would you want a pro life supporter to head a commission on looking into reducing teenage pregnancies? Of course not. You would NEVER accept the recommendations.

It must be someone neutral, or at the least two co heads, one from pro 2nd Amendment, one pro gun control.

We also have to get honest about the break down of the family (and that is any family - gay, straight, etc.) but the family is no longer the center of our lives, and maybe that along with responsibility, and accountability of our teenagers may need to be looked at.

Violent movies, and video games. Mental health, etc. NOTHING should be off the table.

This won't be solved by more gun control laws alone.

I don't have the answers, but I am willing to look at all possible solutions.

There are at least 200 million non politicians adults that could contribute with ideas, but if an open round table is set up to gather info and discuss solutions it would be best. Basically and ad hoc commision of volunteers that are given acces to the neccessary information, and they should be from across all sector of society. That draft is made public and passed on to the legislators, they seem to be too busy in other things of priority to them. It shouldn't take more than a few weeks. Then they write the law based on that, no need to spy on any one because is an open and respectful discussion.

Many laws could be written but it apparently takes more than that. So in parrallel other actions must be taken, people can add that to the conflict resolution drafted by people using the web, like in a forum. Again, I think part of the problem is the need for income, dignity in earning it, and basic social and moral values. And you find that in all kind of people so the variety is not the problem. The good question is why and the true source of the problems. Millions of people ask the same question, and the answer is not more media coverage.

If say the nation is made safe by having no guns and strong punishment for those that do,

please tell me, what do they want a gun for?

Can't they go bowling or play golf? Ping-pong?

I just don't get it.

all the reasons people say they want guns
it's like cigarettes

people used to want cigarettes

now most don't
They can have carrots or celery sticks instead

What do they want a gun for that would be so bad if you did not have one.

someone please tell me

Do you even know how much charity and to which causes, Mike has given in his lifetime?

BILLIONS and all to liberal causes, like the environment

when people start lumping everyone into a group, it reeks of the six degrees of separation crap that conspiracy theorists say about great people like Zbig B.

Myself, I can't stand conspiracy theories.

the NRA would love it if Mike were not part of their solution

for doing something about our insane gun laws.

I live in Montgomery County, MD, the Land of Studies.

Whenever there's a sticky issue our county officials don't want to deal with, they throw a few hundred thousand dollars at it by ordering a long, slow, exhaustive study that takes several years and ends up stashed in some dusty back room, forgotten. And the problems continue.

Fuck studies. We need LAWS. Now.

You need a commission on parenting.

How to develop integrity when raising kids.

If you don't examine that, you won't reject
the video games and movies, and you won't have
enough money to pay all the psychologists in the
world to treat the mentally unbalanced that the
current parenting system creates.

In the end enough congress critters who are paid by the NRA will block any useful legislation, and we'll still be right where we are now.

HOWEVER, even though we're pessimistic as hell we still need to call and email our congress critters and tell them to get off their asses and do something about this.

Mil-Spec health care instead of Mil-Spec bombs.

This is so much on my conscious that I dreamed I was in Vietnam last night, holding a hand grenade that was ready to go off. That's what this country is. Half a trillion per year for death, when we are still in the 60's technology when it comes to...wait for it...

EMOTIONAL WELLNESS.

This isn't "mental health" in the sense that Congress conjures up. This is a thing that affects every one of us. Not just a few ill people.

Damn. Am I the only one who sees this.
