BREAKING: Michigan Gov. Snyder To Veto Bill Allowing Guns In Schools

Source: think progress

ne day before the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, the Michigan Legislature passed a bill to specifically allow guns into schools and other “gun-free zones.” This bill joined a so-called “right-to-work” law and an extreme abortion ban, the GOP-controlled legislature rammed through during its lame duck session.

Following the mass-shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, however, Gov. Rick Snyder (R-MI) promised to give the guns bill “extra consideration.” According to the Detroit News, Snyder has now decided to veto the legislation.

Gov. Rick Snyder plans to veto legislation allowing concealed weapons in public schools, according to bill sponsor Sen. Mike Green, R-Mayville.
The bill allowing highly trained gun owners to carry concealed weapons inside public schools was delivered to Snyder’s desk Tuesday.
“He’s not going to sign it,” Green told The Detroit News.

The Connecticut tragedy has already forced many strident gun supporters to re-examine their beliefs. Most notably, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), who once cut an ad featuring himself literally shooting a piece of legislation, is now leading the push for gun control on Capitol Hill in Sandy Hook’s wake.

... there's no excuse for a bill like that to even be brought to the floor of ... anywhere ... but the nutbags currently running MI obviously didn't give a shit UNTIL this weekend.

Up front I have to say I'm a gun owner, but I don't labor under the illusion that I'm the Lone Ranger.

When my friends point out that people with concealed weapon permits will stop murders, I ask how many concealed pistols they think were in that movie theater in Colorado last year.

It's Colorado for Christ sake, where guns are considered a birthright, and not one person stepped up and jeopardized his/her own life to take that killer out.

Needless to say-the stupids in Mi gov't have not fixed that. Course' you're likely to be met with a Principal and a District policy but it is the law in Mi. as yet that you can show up with a gun, unconcealed, at a school in Mi.

I've been under fire here for most of a week as a right wing nut job because I call for common sense regulation instead of an impossible to implement outright ban on responsible ownership, but that law in MI is just crazy. I don't see the reasoning beyond satisfying the NRA in their no holds barred lobby effort.

The way some teachers can try the patience of parents, it sounds like smoking a cigar on a powder keg.

If it's concealed, you can't argue that a mad gunman knew about the concealed weapon and it scared him off. Has there ever been a case where a mass shooting ended when one of the potential targets took out the shooter?

This sounds like one of those theoretical solutions that has in reality never ever worked.

Laws like this are essentially useless. Once a shooter decides to enter a a school armed to the teeth hell bent on achieving the new high score, what will this law accomplish? Nothing. Then the NRa will argue that gun laws are useless, and they'll be right.

immortalizes the loser, making him in death what he could never achieve in life - famous.

I'd like to see the shooter remain anonymous and planted in an unmarked grave.

Not bloody likely, though.

faces a different legislature come January.

He's a lying piece of shit. He would have signed this bill in a heartbeat if Newtown hadn't happened and he would have smiled doing it. The sane people of Michigan, myself included, called, emailed, tweeted, etc. the prick and told him he better not even think about signing it.

It's a start. One small step at a time. Expose these sleazy politicians.
