Michigan schools cancel classes due to potential threats, end of world rumors
Schools in Lapeer, Genesee, Sanilac counties cancel classes for remainder of year due to potential threats of violence, end of world rumors
Published On: Dec 19 2012 10:44:19 PM EST Updated On: Dec 19 2012 10:52:00 PM EST

DETROIT -
Nearly a dozen school districts in Michigan have decided to cancel classes for the rest of the week.

It has nothing to do with the weather. School leaders say rumors about the end of the world and potential threats of violence are partially behind the cancelations.

The Lapeer Community Schools district will be closed Thursday and Friday. Leaders in that district say there is no credible threat to students, just rumors, but the rumors have caused major distractions in the classroom.

The following Lapeer County schools and school districts will be closed Thursday and Friday:
-- Chartfield Academy
-- Dryden Community Schools
-- Imlay City Schools
-- Lapeer Community Schools
-- North Branch Area Schools

The following Genesee County school districts will be closed Thursday and Friday:
-- Genesee Intermediate School District
-- Goodrich Area Schools
-- Lake Fenton Community Schools
-- Linden Community Schools

Marlette School District, in Sanilac County, also will be closed Thursday and Friday.

(WXYZ) - Schools in mostly Lapeer and Genesee counties have canceled classes for the rest of the week due to rumors of potential threats.

The Marlette Community School District in Sanilac County has also canceled classes for the rest of the week "due to recent events"--as stated on their Website .

A letter on the Chatfield School's Website was posted late Wednesday:

As someone who once went to a high school (in the early 80's) where bomb-threats (esp. during finals week) were fairly common for a few years, my guess is that what has likely happened is that some kid(s) (perhaps who wanted to get out of their finals) have heard that the 'end of the world' was, shall we say, a 'theme' in the CT shooter's life. One of them probably decided to call up and start rambling about the end of the world and talking about violence, so the schools have reacted by shutting down classes ... of course, wanting to avoid a repeat of the tragedy.

My guess is that this 'angle' will be likely be used by students wanting to get out of school (for whatever reason) for years and years after this episode.

Make sure they have additional homework when they come back. And cut some activities for the first week or two. Also, put it in the student handbook at the beginning of the book what will happen in those cases.

Seems like they could have kept quiet about Friday's date, started the 2-week break on Wednesday, covered their asses, and left the hysteria out of it all at the same time.

As someone said up-thread, the schools aren't closing because of any genuine fears of the apocalypse. They're acting out of an abundance of caution after shooting hoax in Grand Blanc and a social media rumor of a "student revolt" which has been growing. The rumor talks about kids taking weapons to school and "going out in a blaze of glory" since Friday is doomsday anyway. Given the tragedy in CT, school officials and police can't simply ignore the threats. Meanwhile, I'm sure there's a bunch of Twitter savvy kids congratulating themselves on getting classes canceled.
