Settlement reached in Toyota acceleration cases

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Toyota Motor Corp. said Wednesday it has reached a settlement worth more than $1 billion in a case involving hundreds of lawsuits over acceleration problems in its vehicles.

The company said in a statement that the deal will resolve cases involving motorists who said the value of their vehicles was adversely affected by previous recalls stemming from sudden acceleration problems.

Lawyer Steve Berman, a plaintiffs' attorney, said the settlement is the largest settlement in U.S. history involving automobile defects.

"We kept fighting and fighting and we secured what we think was a good settlement given the risks of this litigation," Berman told The Associated Press.

I had an experience with sudden acceleration. (($14.000 in damages)) Those class action lawyers refused to take my case because I wasn't injured. I never believed it was the floor mat or a sticky gas pedal...however they repaired them anyway. I always believed it had to do with the computers. So I'm interested in what "reflashing the computers" meant. I wonder if I need to have that done.

Throttle cable, mechanical speedometer, manual seats, manual windows. 300K miles, runs like a top.
I think they didn't thoroughly test the new technology, and rushed it into production. Too bad, cause their old product was rock-solid.

Pretty interesting. Here is the final summary:

Summary: Part of the US DOT investigation of Toyota Sudden Untended Acceleration (SUA) involved analysis of the throttle control software. JPL LaRS applied several techniques, including static analysis and logic model checking, to the software. A handful of logic models were built Some weaknesses were identiﬁed; however, no cause for SUA was found. The full NASA report includes numerous other analyses.
