Republican Party chair in Illinois throws "full support" behind same-sex marriage in Illinois

Source: Chicago Sun-Times

The momentum continues to build for same sex marriage in Illinois.

On Wednesday, Pat Brady, chairman of the Illinois Republican Party, said he was putting his "full support" behind marriage equality legislation pending in Springfield.

"More and more Americans understand that if two people want to make a lifelong commitment to each other, government should not stand in their way," Brady said. "Giving gay and lesbian couples the freedom to get married honors the best conservative principles. It strengthens families and reinforces a key Republican value - that the law should treat all citizens equally."

I really do believe President Obama's support has helped the country a lot on this issue. Of course he needed a big push from the dedicated activists who do amazing work.

If Italy can ignore the church, the one in this country stands no chance of preventing it.

flip their shit when they hear this. Good news. Glad to see that at least there are one or two sane people left in the GOP.

It gives me some small hope for humanity.

Reduce government interference in private life? Check. Helps families? Check. Expands rights to those who didn't have them beforehand, as opposed to the whole 'special rights' thing? Check.

I like watching people Get It, whether in my terms or their own.

He sees which way the wind blows...He's in survival mode.

He no longer feels compelled to hide what he believes in order to maintain ideological purity to a minority. I know a lot of Republican "local" leadership, outside of the bible belt, most of them don't really give a f**k and even have gay friends or relatives that they like and treat decently. They feel the need to toe the line publicly in order to keep the Christian conservatives on their side...until they don't need them.

Cold conservative calculus. It's nauseating...but it's real. It's beneficial for him to now shed the fringe religious extremists and appeal to moderation. Lets hope those same extremists realize this is the future of GOP opposing abortion as well...and GTFO of politics, leaving the GOP to swing and falter.

Had a gay hating gay man as local state representative (Roy Ashburn) for years. He was outed when he was arrested for drunk driving coming out of a gay bar in Sacramento driving a state vehicle. He resigned from office. He was very vocal against gays during his terms in office.

Now he's all gay friendly and ran for again for office last year and was soundly thrashed.

Regardless of their motivation, more and more Republicans are coming around.

The reason, IMHO, are the polls showing a majority supports gay marriage and gay rights and don't want to be left in the dustbins of history.
