General Details Pentagon Tensions With Obama on Afghanistan

Source: NYT

In a memoir, Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, the former American commander in Afghanistan, writes that tensions between the White House and the Pentagon were evident in the Obama administration from its opening months in office.

The beginning of President Obama’s first term “saw the emergence of an unfortunate deficit of trust between the White House and the Department of Defense, largely arising from the decision-making process on Afghanistan,” General McChrystal writes. “The effects were costly.”

The book by General McChrystal, who was fired from his post in 2010 after an article in Rolling Stone quoted him and his staff making dismissive comments about the White House, is likely to disappoint readers who are looking for a vivid blow-by-blow account of infighting within the administration.

The book, titled “My Share of the Task: A Memoir,” does not provide an account of the White House meeting at which Mr. Obama accepted the general’s resignation. General McChrystal’s tone toward Mr. Obama is respectful, and he notes that his wife, Annie, joined the crowd at Mr. Obama’s inauguration. The book is to be released on Monday.

obvious power play by the Pentagon since the days on Eisenhower would find this a "no brainer".

Sorry, I have a bias against our current crop of Roman Emperors in the military, and those who think "War is Peace".

They would be called praetors ("leader&quot , referring to their duties as the chief military commanders. A Roman Emperor was the ruler of Rome and all of its provinces.

Just trying to bring some historical perspective to the conversation.

At the next video conference, General McChrystal presented a slide showing that his objectives had been derived from Mr. Obama’s own speeches and a White House strategy review. “But it was clear to me that the mission itself was now on the table for review and adjustment,” he wrote.

America's top brass are very unimpressive lot. I cannot think of anything they have accomplished in my lifetime. Overrunning Iraq was like knocking over a sidewalk vendor's cart.

Iraq II was easy because of Desert Storm, when we wiped out a good portion of armour and morale of the Iraqi fighters.

The reason it was "like knocking over a cart" is due to the advantages in US technology and training, but that doesn't mean it isn't an "accomplishment". (I put that in quotes because of just how f-ing terrible the whole thing was to even be there in the first place).

To use a sports comparison, that would be like the people who say that NBA coach Phil Jackson really didn't accomplish anything because he always had Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant on his team when he won.

Iran and Iraq sat at a bloody stalemate for years.....

Now CIC Obama has a chance to REALLY impress us by ending the madness altogether. Bring every man and woman home from Iraq (yes we are still there) and Afghanistan NOW. Not one more young American or civilian death. No more $20,000 missiles to wipe out one true Taliban and 7 of his family, only to have 2 pop up in his place.

How about a truck full of $20,000 worth of school books being delivered to a poor inner-city or rural area of the US instead?

THAT is a White House strategy we can all get behind.
