Nearly half of U.S. children are undervaccinated, a new study shows
Source: Denver Post
Nearly half of U.S. children are under-vaccinated because of delays or refusals by their parents, according to a massive Kaiser study, showing widening immunization gaps even in families with primary doctors and coordinated health care.
The study of more than 320,000 children up to age 2 in seven states also showed a steady increase in the percentage of families delaying or refusing vaccines between 2004 and 2008.
Some parents deviate from the recommended vaccine schedule because they didn't have time for an appointment, or their child was sick on the appointed day and couldn't be immunized safely, said Kaiser Permanente Institute for Health Research scientist Jason Glanz.
The study showed 48.7 percent of children under 24 months were under-vaccinated by at least one day between 2004 and 2008. The numbers grew from 41.8 percent in 2004 to 54.4 percent in 2008.

(11,364 posts)... being sick? Are their parents not getting the needed time off to get them to the doctor?
... or are these percentages not much different than they were ten years ago?

(11,364 posts)That's a pretty big difference for just four years.
Most of those people apparently are not "ani-vaccers", either.

(564 posts)Did you hear about the 800 plus people infected with measles in San Diego a year or so ago?
A couple and their young son coming home from a vacation in Switzerland caused it.
Should have been criminal charges pressed imho.

(19,274 posts)Yet we treat vaccines like burdens instead of blessings.
Maybe we are too stupid to survive long-term as a species.

(11,464 posts)and how many people this year didn't get a flu shot?
The thing about vaccines is how it puts a ring around it, and leaves the illness with no place to grow and expand.
anyone not getting the vaccine is a clear and present danger to everyone else.
I would make it mandatory for everyone who is not allergic(and there are alternatives for those that are anyhow) to have all vaccines prior to school each year,
and somehow make the parents liable for $$$$$ others who then get sick incur.

(8,352 posts)are no longer mandatory for everyone prior to a school year?
There wasn't a single school I attended from a daycare to multiple elementary, middle, and finally a public high school where proof of vaccination was not required before attendance. This continued through college and through several graduate degrees.
Have the anti-vaxers so perverted the system that now this is not the case?!

Not sure if that is just our town or state or if it is available nationwide. Alot of times its hard, especially for low wage workers, to get any time off work.

(1,014 posts)And too often!! My daughter was always so sick after hers, and I always did what the dr said. At age nine, went into DKA! Is now Type Diabetic!
Her younger brothers, have only had a couple rounds of shots, at our asking. Given very slowly, not pounding their immune system with it all, they are the healthiest 5 & 6 yr olds in their school!!!
Compounding the immune system with all the viruses that the shots give dead parts of, just weakens it more. I believe in time to let the body heal to vaccinate. Not compound it with several diseases that it needs to fight! It'll just kill itself!!!

(879 posts)Daughter's pediatrian had retired and her records were with her "somewhere in Florida". We had lost her immunization records during our move and she needed the records to start school. So, not thinking her doctor would suggest anything harmful, I went with his advice and got her "caught up" on all her shots over a six month period. Within another six months, she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. I am fairly certain there was a genetic predisposition for the disease, but the barage of immunizations triggered it.
