Senate Republicans this afternoon pushed through a surprise rewrite of the 2011 redistricting plan that erases a Democratic seat in western Virginia and creates a sixth majority black district that would be located between Petersburg and Danville.
Democrats were shocked by the move, vowing to oppose the new plan in court.

The so-called re-redistricting plan was woven into House-passed legislation that makes technical adjustments to delegates' districts.
The revised plan cleared the Senate on a party-line vote of 20-19. Missing this afternoon was Sen. Henry L. Marsh III, D-Richmond, who was in Washington for President Barack Obamas inauguration ceremony.

Were not done yet.
At the end of this wild day, the Senate adjourned in memory or (sic) General Thomas J. Stonewall Jackson, according to the minutes of the session. Jan. 21 is the Confederate generals birthday.

Could someone explain to me just how this is ethical, let alone legal? I am very curious about this devious maneuver.

(1,201 posts)I'm reminded of the line in the movie The Sting by the character Doyle Lonnigan (Robert Shaw), "Your friend is quite a card player, Mr. Kelly. How does he do it?" Kelly (Robert Redford): "It's easy; he cheats!"
When the Republicans can't win fair and square, they are always more than willing (even eager) to cheat. Every fair minded voter in Virginia should reject this latest Bull Shit move on the part of the Republicans.

(2,233 posts)They adjourned not for the national holiday (MLK's birthday), but for "Stonewall" Jackson's birthday? And they'll have the gall to come out and argue if anyone claims they're playing to their racist base.
