Army drill scares residents on Houston's south side
Source: KTRK-TV
The sight of Army helicopters and the sound of gunfire created a lot of concern Monday afternoon in one Houston neighborhood.
We received a lot of phones calls, Tweets and Facebook posts from worried neighbors, wondering what was going on.
SkyEye 13 HD was over the south side where at first look, it appeared there was a massive SWAT scene happening.

The U.S. Army along with other agencies took over the old Carnegie Vanguard High School near Scott and Airport. There were armed men in fatigues, plenty of weapons and what many thought were real live rounds

(27,137 posts)"You see," my colleague went on, "one doesnt see exactly where or how to move. Believe me, this is true. Each act, each occasion, is worse than the last, but only a little worse. You wait for the next and the next. You wait for one great shocking occasion, thinking that others, when such a shock comes, will join with you in resisting somehow. You dont want to act, or even talk, alone; you dont want to go out of your way to make trouble. Why not?Well, you are not in the habit of doing it. And it is not just fear, fear of standing alone, that restrains you; it is also genuine uncertainty.
"Uncertainty is a very important factor, and, instead of decreasing as time goes on, it grows. Outside, in the streets, in the general community, everyone is happy. One hears no protest, and certainly sees none. You know, in France or Italy there would be slogans against the government painted on walls and fences; in Germany, outside the great cities, perhaps, there is not even this. In the university community, in your own community, you speak privately to your colleagues, some of whom certainly feel as you do; but what do they say? They say, Its not so bad or Youre seeing things or Youre an alarmist.
"And you are an alarmist. You are saying that this must lead to this, and you cant prove it. These are the beginnings, yes; but how do you know for sure when you dont know the end, and how do you know, or even surmise, the end? On the one hand, your enemies, the law, the regime, the Party, intimidate you. On the other, your colleagues pooh-pooh you as pessimistic or even neurotic. You are left with your close friends, who are, naturally, people who have always thought as you have.

(14,971 posts)Authorities in Miami, however, said there's nothing to be concerned about.
This is routine training conducted by military personnel designed to ensure the militarys ability to operate in urban environments, prepare forces for upcoming overseas deployments, and meet mandatory training certification requirement, local police told the Miami Herald.
Nevertheless, the sight of soldiers rappelling onto rooftops and the sound of gunfire have many concerned.
At one point, a photographer in Miami captured video of a military helicopter firing its machine guns as it flew over an area freeway. The chopper was firing blanks, but an artist visiting the city apparently didn't know that.
I heard the machine gun fire and then I hit the deck I didnt know what to expect, and it was one of the loudest things Id ever heard, Josh Epperson said.
CBS Miami said that a similar exercise took place in April 2011, and The Blaze reported that Black Hawk helicopters buzzed buildings in Minneapolis last summer.
But many are wondering why, and fearing the worst.
"This is in anticipation of eventual inner-city anarchy. However, if civil war breaks out the military arm of the DHS will step in," one person wrote at KTRK.
"A multi-agency drilling training....for what and against whom?" asked another.
