Senior British rabbi filmed telling alleged child abuse victim not to go to the police

Wednesday 30 January 2013
A senior British rabbi has been filmed telling an alleged victim of child sexual abuse not to go to the police.
Rabbi Ephraim Padwa, who is leader of the UKs Strictly Orthodox Jewish community, told the alleged victim that it was mesira, or forbidden, to report a suspected Jewish sex offender to a non-Jewish authority.
His advice, which was secretly recorded as part of a Channel 4s Dispatches investigation to be shown tonight, will reignite the controversy about the cover-up of child sex abuse by religious groups following global scandals surrounding the Roman Catholic church
Strictly Orthodox Jewish people, known as Charedi, number 40,000 people, around a sixth of the Jewish population in Britain.

(10,175 posts)They always seem to think so...hoping on their part that it's "entrapment"
It still ends up being a conviction.

(101,390 posts)There hasn't been a conviction in a court, since they say "alleged victim". But no, it's not a 'sting', in the sense they didn't just make up an allegation to see what he would say.

(42,239 posts)even when cross posted on Youtube by Ch4. I think its because the Beeb which owns effectively owns Ch4 charges for use outside of the UK.
I notice its Stamford Hill where most of the Orthys seem to be. Not as an excuse but as an observation the incidence of this may be in proportion to the general population.

(101,390 posts)I didn't expect Channel 4 to say that couldn't be read outside the UK.
But the BBC doesn't 'own' Channel 4 in any sense. BBC America may show some Channel 4 programmes in the USA, but it shows ITV ones too. Channel 4 is a public corporation, with OFCOM and the government appointing the non-executive directors: http://www.channel4.com/info/corporate/about

(42,239 posts)obviously wrongly, that because its part public funded it was related to the Beeb.
