Former New York Mayor Ed Koch dead at 88

NEW YORK Former New York Mayor Ed Koch, the combative politician who rescued the city from near-financial ruin during three City Hall terms, has died at age 88.

Spokesman George Arzt says Koch died Friday morning of congestive heart failure.

In City Hall, Koch embodied New York for the rest of the world. He won a national reputation with his feisty style and his trademark question, "How'm I doing?"

During his years as mayor, from 1978 to 1989, his tight fiscal policies pulled the city out of severe financial difficulties. But homelessness and racial tensions soared and critics charged that

In April 2008, Koch shelled out $20,000 to buy a plot in Trinity Cemetery on Riverside Drive — the only Manhattan cemetery that still had room.

“I don't want to leave Manhattan, even when I'm gone,” he said at the time. “This is my home. The thought of having to go to New Jersey was so distressing to me.”

Often disagreed with Koch but he was always genuinely passionate about the city.

Prefer not to dance on graves but what he did in 2004 was downright ghastly. Beyond the pale.

endorsed Giuliani,Al D'Amato, Peter King, George Pataki and in 2004, George Bush
VERY slow to address the growing AIDS epidemic in NYC in the 80s
huge increase in homelessness, poverty, racial disharmony

Not my kind of Democrat.

But I do remember his lambasting of the Superbowl-winning New Youk Giants as a 'foreign' football team, which I thoroughly agreed with.
