When I was in Turkey on business, my local colleagues wouldn't let me walk anywhere without an escort, because the separatists had just hijacked a ferry.

but I doubt it'd be the PKK. Thus far, they've never attacked a US target, even though the State Department lists the PKK as a terrorist organization.

Maybe some new separatist org on the scene?

It could be extremists as well......there are extremist groups operating in Turkey, though the police and intelligence services do a good job keeping track of them. It's just the odds, sad to say. Sooner or later, one of them will slip through.

*EDIT* This just came over the Hürriyet website: the bomber is linked to a radical leftist org known as the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party/Front (DHKP/C). They are an illegal organization in Turkey. Here's the link to the Hürriyet English report: http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/Default.aspx?PageID=238&NID=40308

It doesn't look like a lot of damage was done to the US Embassy itself. The person at the checkpoint was a Turkish security guard, the other the nimrod who set off the bomb. It looks like they are going to start stepping up these attacks on US Embassies and making them targets on a regular basis. Those of us overseas depend on the embassies and consulates for contact with our home government.

(Reuters) - A suicide bomber who attacked the U.S. Embassy in Turkey on Friday, killing himself and a security guard, was believed to have been a Turkish citizen, Interior Minister Muammer Guler told reporters.

Guler said a woman was badly wounded in the attack on the U.S. mission and that two security guards were receiving out-patient care at a hospital.

... Ecevit Sanli, 40, was released after being diagnosed with a brain disorder incurred during a hunger strike.

He used TNT and detonated a hand grenade in the attack, it was confirmed.

Sanli was a member of the outlawed leftist Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front, or DHKP-C, which has claimed responsibility for assassinations and bombings since the 1970s but has been relatively quiet in recent years.

The motives for yesterday's attack remain unclear ...
