Goodbye, high-fat chips: New rules for school snacks

Source: USA Today

Out with the candy bars, high-fat chips, full-calorie sodas and sugary pastries sold in school a la carte lines, vending machines and snack bars during the school day.

Today, the government released its proposed standards for "competitive foods," the name given to foods that are not part of the regular school meals. The standards set limits for calories, fat, sugar and sodium.

The proposed rules do not apply to foods sold at after-school fundraisers, bake sales or concession stands at sporting events and other after-school activities. They also don't affect the foods kids bring in their lunches or what's served at birthday parties, holidays and other celebrations at school.

"Good nutrition lays the groundwork for good health and academic success," Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in a statement. Updated nutrition guidelines for school lunch and breakfast went into effect this school year.

The PukeBagger Outrage!!

More high fat foods for our children! More high sugar foods for our children! More guns for our children!

Whatever they say, it'll be predictable.

it's sugars and carbs from starches and high fructose corn syrup.

Those extra carbs spike blood sugar and the body starts storing more and more fat in fat cells.

Higher protein (and, yes, even eating protein-laden food high in fat) is the best thing for a human being. It's what we ate for millennia. All this processed crap and chemically altered crap and highly processed wheat is a rather recent introduction into the human diet and it's literally killing us.

Sounds crazy. May be a bad idea. But I've been getting away with it -- if that's the right expression -- for a LONG time now.

No on the rum. In those amounts I WOULD be in trouble if many of those drinks also had alcohol.

I work with a guy that drinks two 2 liters of diet coke a day in the summer and nearly as much in the winter. Doesn't seem to be hurting him either.

I kicked a two-liter a day habit a few months back and it was very hard to let go. The caffeine is addictive, and the delivery (carbonated bubbles) makes it more addictive, at least to me. But I do feel much better. I still drink a Coke Classic from time to time, when I'm out or in a moment of weakness at the checkout line I'll grab a 10 oz bottle. But that's pretty much it. Of course, you can avoid soda and still be unhealthy - you have to take care of yourself in other ways. But surely you can see that you'd be better off without it. It has ZERO nutrition and at least one ingredient that is a known carcinogen (caramel coloring) or just "iffy" ingredients (Nutrasweet in diet drinks and HFCS in others).

There was one soda machine at my high school, in the band room. There were no vending machines anywhere else in the school.
