WASHINGTON (AP) - At the same time the government certified Boeing's 787 Dreamliners as safe, federal rules barred the type of batteries used to power the airliner's electrical systems from being carried as cargo on passenger planes because of the fire risk.
Now the situation is reversed.
Dreamliners worldwide were grounded nearly three weeks ago after lithium ion batteries that are part of the planes led to a fire in one plane and smoke in a second. But new rules exempt aircraft batteries from the ban on large lithium ion batteries as cargo on flights by passenger planes.
In effect, that means the Dreamliner's batteries are now allowed to fly only if they're not attached to a Dreamliner.

While Boeings 787 Dreamliners are grounded, the batteries causing airliners troubles can still fly. (33 posts)The Government DOES not look out for you anymore, the Government looks out for their corporate donors (AKA, BUY THEM OFF). Same reason we are forced to eat Monsanto GM grown food while Europe bans their products.

(246 posts)Last year I learned the hard way that the United States Postal Service had a posted alert telling me I couldn't mail an Apple iPod Touch to my grandson who lives in Europe because it contained a lithium ion battery. Might catch fire ...
Only could be shipped within the U.S. --- oh bother and one unhappy grandson.
FedEx however saved the day and they shipped --- for a price! --- he received his gift in under 5 days.
I haven't taken the time to see if the alert is still posted on the USPS site.

(812 posts)Oh and we have to tax the shit out of Chinese Photo-Voltaic Solar Panels, those might cause reduced energy dependence and they certainly are not going to stand for that!
I am going to say this as clearly as I know how:The Energy Companies are terrorists.
I at once thought it was just the Saudi's but now have come around to the realization of this fact.
Some of us have been saying this since the 1970's before they discovered Man Made Global Warming
People, find ways to use less, lets hit these bastards in their pocketbook!
