8 Dead, 38 Hurt as Tour Bus Crashes in Calif
Source: ABC News
At least eight people were killed and 38 injured Sunday when a bus carrying Mexican tourists careened out of control while traveling down a Southern California mountain road, struck a car, flipped and plowed into a pickup truck, authorities said.
The accident occurred around 6:30 p.m. and left State Route 38 littered with debris, the bus sideways across the two lanes and its front end crushed. Emergency crews worked to free passengers who were trapped in the bus, which was carrying a tour group from Tijuana.
The violence of the crash and severity of the injuries made for a chaotic scene, and authorities had a difficult time determining how many people were injured or killed. California Highway Patrol spokesman Mario Lopez said at least eight and perhaps 10 were killed, and 38 were transported to hospitals.
California Department of Transportation spokeswoman Michelle Profant said the scene was shocking.

(20,776 posts)I remember taking many bus rides, and I can't recall ever seeing them. I know for sure School buses never did. I don't recall any on Greyhound. As for luxury Tour buses do they? I don't remember. I took a tour by Bus to Vancouver Island once. I don't recall if we had Seat belts on that thing or not.

(5,446 posts)A lot of new buses and delivery trucks are going to automatic transmissions which is fine for most things but in mountain driving you don't get the slow down from compression you would with a manual transmission. This happened towards the bottom of a mountain road with almost a full load of passengers, I think this guy probably wasn't real experienced and fried his brakes on the way down, I have seen it before.
