Pennsylvania Republicans To Introduce New Election-Rigging Plan
Source: thinkprogress.org By Ian Millhiser on Feb 4, 2013
Last month, Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus called up states that have been consistently blue that are fully controlled red to rig future presidential elections by changing the way electoral votes are allocated. Under Priebus proposal, blue states such as Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania would stop awarding electoral votes to the winner of the state as a whole, and instead would award them one-by-one to the winner of each congressional district. Meanwhile, red states would continue to award 100 percent of their electors to the Republican. This plan appears to have lost steam, however, as several top Republicans in key states announced they will not support it.
Even as Republicans in key states such as Michigan, Ohio, Florida and Virginia came out against this election-rigging plan, however, Pennsylvania Republicans have been eerily quite. We now know why. According to the New Castle News a local paper in western Pennsylvania, Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi (R) will introduce legislation this month that will effectively give away a large chuck of Pennsylvanias electoral votes to the Republican presidential candidate, regardless of who wins the state as a whole.
How This Election-Rigging Plan Works
Unlike the plan Priebus backs, the New Republican Plan would not tie electoral votes to congressional districts. Instead, it would award the overwhelming majority of Pennsylvanias electoral votes proportionally according to the popular vote, with two additional electoral votes going to the winner of the state as a whole. If the New Republican Plan had been in effect in 2012, Mitt Romney would have received 8 of Pennsylvania 20 electoral votes, despite losing the state by a substantial margin.

(4,033 posts)Republicans hate Democracy. They believe that it is a terrible form of government. They believe that the privileged should make the rules - the 'makers' if you will - and that the rest of us - the 'takers' - exist simply to serve the will of the privileged few. Until you understand that, you will never understand the Republicans. Its not that they are trying to 'cheat', it is that they honestly and sincerely believe that government exists to to protect and help the 1% and that is the natural order of things and that they other 99% exist solely to help redistribute wealth upwards.
Back in the early days of railroading, if you were killed on the job, the reward to your family was that your son was offered your job. If you didn't have a son, well, tough. That's the Republican mentality. And until we realize that is what they are all about and make a drastic change in our voting patterns and destroy the party, nothing will change.

(179 posts)Good morning, I do hope you are preaching to the choir, since we are DEMOCRATS! Or are supposed to be on this site. In other words, the reason that we are not repugnants is that the r's believe they are just as you say: privileged. This is a profound stupidity spoken in its worst voice!

(43,209 posts)to win elections. Most of the national and most other state's GOP
can be against this plan, giving leeway for the hacks in Pennsylvania
to rig their state and tip the Electoral College.

(9,791 posts)PA is an odd state. James Carville called us Pittsburgh and Philadelphia with Alabama in between. Too many people are ill-informed and tend to vote against their best interests. The PA Democratic party organization isn't that well organized.

(1,536 posts)The thugs here in Michigan have just said that 'It's not on our agenda at this time'.
They also had said that about the right-to-work-for-less laws on more than one occasion and, when they finally decided it WAS in their 'agenda' it was written up and passed into law within days.
I don't trust our thugs as far as I could throw them and what they say doesn't mean crap. They lie, lie and lie some more.

(11,464 posts)for one thing, it would have changed NOTHING in 2012 as President Obama would have known as it's done in advance and they would have campaigned different
for another, it would mean Hillary will go into each district, and with her coattails in 2016 will get alot of house victories
for another, let's say its Jeb/Christie and they win PA.
if they do this, they will in effect lose 1/2 the state's electoral votes and the democratic party would gain
but as i have said for 10 times, I believe they are attempting to get the dems to get rid of the electoral system altogether knowing they can't win
Plus, Hillary is now polling ahead in 5 or 6 red states.
She will get 450 electoral votes. and the popular votes.
So, like the repubs did when they signed away the rights to more than 2 terms, and Ike and Reagan could have won a 3rd term if legal but it wasn't, same would happen
IMHO

(15,262 posts)if you get my drift. It disempowers PA by making it nearly irrelevant in a Presidential contest. It also takes away the coat tail factor for the Dems in some ways, because the campaign will ignore PA as a non-swing state.

(813 posts)They're trying to do that here in Michigan too. With a right-wing dominated state Legislature and compliant Governor (Rick Snyder), they just might get it done, like they did with shoving through right-to-work.

(24,764 posts)After all, the rigged EC scheme would effectively give Republican votes more electoral weight than Democratic votes, a violation of equal protection and/or equal representation if you ask me. IANOL.
If they can't disenfranchise Democratic voters, the next worst thing they're up to is back door disenfranchisement by severly diluting the power of Democratic votes.
