Obama Calls for Boy Scouts to End Gay Ban

Source: The Advocate

President Obama affirmed his opposition to the Boy Scouts ban on openly gay scouts and troop leaders in an interview on Sunday with CBS Evening News.

Scott Pelley asked Obama if scouting should be opening to gays and the president responded with an emphatic, "Yes."

When asked why, Obama said, "Gays and lesbians should have access and opportunity the same way everybody else does in every institution and walk of life, and the Scouts are a great institution that are promoting young people and exposing them to opportunites and leadership that will serve people for the rest of their lives, and nobody should be barred from that."

I heard some guys on the radio whining about the statement this morning, saying that it's none of the President's business and that he had no right to inject his opinion. If you happen to hear a right winger parrot this meme, please correct them with this little factoid:

By the BSA's own choice, every President of the United States since 1910 has also served as the honorary President of the Boy Scouts of America. Like so many other Presidents before him, Barack Obama was named Honorary President of the BSA in 2009 and still holds that title today. That ABSOLUTELY gives him the right to comment on the BSA's internal affairs.

(and thank you for reminding me ) he has as much a right to give an opinion on it as any of us do, including the whiners. They sure do hate the 1st Amendment when it comes to anyone but themselves...
