French Government Strikes Down 200-Year-Old Pants Ban for Women

Source: PRI's The World

BY TRACI TONG ? FEBRUARY 4, 2013

Ladies of Paris no longer have to fear being arrested for wearing pants. A 200-year-old law preventing Parisian women from wearing trousers, has been struck from the books.

The law was passed in November 1800 prohibited Parisian women from “dressing like a man” unless she received permission from the local police.

Host Marco Werman talks with New York Times’ Paris-based Elaine Sciolino, who credits the new Socialist government under President Francois Hollande with the law’s revocation.

Scoliono says the there had been attempts to modify the law in 1892 and 1909 that would have allow women to wear trousers if they were holding a bicycle handlebar or the reins of a horse.

that would not allow women to wear pants. I started a petition to allow women to wear pants. There were so many signatures that the company relented and allowed women to wear pants.

And before you start laughing at them, remember that interracial marriage wasn't completely legal in America until 1968.

Sounds more like they're having a sort out of redundant laws. We may still have old laws in place in the the UK under the Hackney Carriage Act which covers taxis which dictate that licensed taxis carry straw and the drivers are allowed to piss against the offside road wheel.

There has been some issues brought up, particularly with women working in legislative positions, though no arrests or anything like that.

The woman who promoted the repeal made the point there shouldn't be a law like this which could be enforced and that it was getting more attention now because it had become attached somewhat to GLBT civil rights issues.

I think the bottom line was that it could be used to discriminate and needed to go for that reason alone.

in school. That was US school. We used to wear them under our skirts when it got really cold, then take them off when we got to school.

As I recall, culottes gave us our *in* to begin changing those rules. They gained great popularity as they become ok to wear.

Ladies: Dresses or Skirts and blouses; Lads: shirt and tie and sweater or jacket, and dress trousers. No SNEAKERS!!!

The children of today couldn't imagine it, I'm sure--even the kids who go to "uniform" schools have uniforms that consist of khakis or jeans (pants or shorts) and polo shirts!

Ha--that's unenforceable!

And this one has been overtaken by events, too--I know that Plymouth County packies are open on Sun...I went to one a few weeks ago!

Massachusetts liquor stores can only open on Sundays if they are in Berkshire, Essex, Franklin, Middlesex or Worcester counties and are within 10 miles of the Vermont or New Hampshire borders.
