9-year-old gives birth: Mexican authorities seek 17-year-old father
Feb. 6, 2013 8:34 PM,
A 9-year-old girl who was impregnated when she was 8 has given birth to a healthy girl weighing nearly 6 pounds in Guadalajara, Mexico, authorities say.
Police are seeking the 17-year-old father, who fled two months ago, when the girl realized she was pregnant, Lino Ginzalez Corona, spokesperson at Jalisco State Prosecutor's Office, told ABC News.
The 5-pound, 15-ounce baby girl was delivered by Caesarean section Jan. 27, Enrique Rabago, director of the Hospital General de Occidente, told a news conference Wednesday. The mother, identified only as Dafne, and child were released over the weekend.
"Due to her age, her body is not able (or) in the best shape to have a baby," he said.

(8,032 posts)The article provides no evidence either way.
Also missing: any statement about whether or not the girl wished to keep her baby.
If she did, then forcing an abortion on her would have violated one of the root principles of Pro-Choice. A pregnant female is a mother, and the mother's right to choose is supreme.
If she didn't, then it's likely she was co-erced. That brings up questions of whether a parent's beliefs or preferences trump a young mother's once she's confirmed pregnant. If they do, then at what age does parental fiat cease?
The article does say her mother approved birth control.

(11,795 posts)in Guadalajara are fairly slim. Guadalajara is an odd place. On the one hand, it's extremely conservative. On the other, there is a huge GLBTQ community. It's in a part of Mexico that broke out into extreme violence over anti-clerical reforms implemented in the Constitution of 1917. The rebellion was in defense of the Church.
So, I'm going to bet that there are zero abortion clinics in her hometown, south of Guadalajara, and not very many in the city itself.
FWIW.

(2,749 posts)I don't know, it might be relevant. Is abortion legal in Mexico and if so what are the restrictions? I have refrained until now from reading about this story other that seeing the headlines; I haven't clicked on a link to read about it because it is so extremely disturbing to me, the mother of an eight year old girl. I don't know how an eight or nine year old could be ovulating, this must be some medical anomaly, but yeah, if my precious girl, and jesus help me I can hardly even think of such a scenario, had this happen to her I would not have allow the pregnancy to continue. The termination would be much less traumatic than going through the pregnancy and it would have ended several months ago and the girl could have begun to get psychiatric help without a yowling infant in the picture. Now they have two ruined children on their hands. I don't know anything about her home life, if there is a father, what their financial situation is or how this teenager got her alone to molest her and how long it had been going on. And seriously, in what parallel universe do parents have to concern themselves with birth control for their daughters who are attending 2nd grade? Not in my world. If my daughter follows me she will probably begin to menstruate at about age 12. At that point I will be speaking with her about contraception and very uncomfortable but other necessary information she requires. Maybe I'm repressed, a prude, whatever you want to call it, but I have a really hard time seeing my children as sexual beings and I feel like I'm taking a little bit of their innocence when I have to speak to them about sex, and I especially am not ready when they are still in elementary school. This is a horrific situation with no easy answers as to how to deal with it. I think that I would find it nearly impossible to hold myself together under such circumstances but I suppose I would find the strength for my child's sake. I think I would need lots of valium though.

(16,191 posts)I was just arguing in another thread yesterday that a womans choice is absolute, but this case is a reminder that there are few real absolutes in the world.
An 8 year old is not a "woman" in any sense of the term. You're talking about a prepubescent child. Heck, I don't even think she'd be that...preadolescence usually starts at 9 or 10. An 8 year old is just a child.
An 8 year old cannot consent to sex in any way, shape, or form. Not even with another child. If a pregnancy occurred, it's an injury caused by a sexual assault, and like any other injury, it should be repaired by doctors. If a young child had part of her leg cut off, we wouldn't ask the childs permission to reattach it. If a young child had cancer, a parent isn't going to ask the childs permission to treat it. If a young child becomes pregnant after a sexual assault, the young child doesn't really need to provide any input on the treatment for that particular injury. Young children like this do NOT grasp the implications of a pregnancy and cannot understand the ramifications of their decisions. "Choice" does require the ability to understand the nature of the choice you're being asked to make. An 8 year old child simply cannot do that.
It's tragic, but a pregnant 8 year old is NOT the same situation as a pregnant 14 year old, or even a pregnant 12 year old. The difference in mental development between those ages is HUGE.

(111,261 posts)The law was liberalized in Mexico City, itself, but too late to do this child any good.
I just hope she's got a good support system around her. Likely she thought a baby was going to be like another one of her dolls. She's going to be in for a big surprise there and will need a lot of help.

(42,239 posts)'Nine-year-old' Mexican girl who gave birth IS really aged 12 and the baby's father is her STEPFATHER
Mexican state officials confirmed that the girl who gave birth to a child two weeks ago is 12 or 13 years old and not 9-years-old like her mother previously claimed.
The officials also confirmed that her 44-year-old stepfather is the father of the child and not her teenage boyfriend.

(42,239 posts)that she may in fact even be 14 in which case given that is the legal age of consent in Mexico the issue had the father been her boyfriend may have been less significant.
Different ball game now its clear who the father really is.
