Deb (R-NE) Fischer: Why I can't support Hagel nomination
Source: Omaha World Herald
By Deb Fischer
(The writer, a Republican, is Nebraska's junior U.S. senator.)
The decision to oppose a president's nominee is not one I take lightly.
I acknowledge that the president will nominate individuals with policy views distinct from my own; indeed, such differences do not automatically disqualify nominees. While Sen. John Kerry and I do not agree on much, I nonetheless supported his nomination for secretary of state because his positions are within the mainstream of American foreign policy.
It is my constitutional duty to provide rigorous scrutiny of all nominees, particularly for secretary of defense. As then-Sen. Bob Kerrey once noted, the defense secretary has to be considered differently than other Cabinet officers because he has the authority to move troops. I agree with this heightened standard.
I appreciate Chuck Hagel's service, both as an infantryman in Vietnam and as a United States senator representing Nebraska. However, after meeting with him privately and witnessing his confusing and contradictory testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee, I cannot support his nomination.

She can't vote for Hagel because Miss McConnell told her she couldn't.

(22,000 posts)I have a feeling the Republicans are going to team up with the Israeli lobby and block Hagel's nomination. It's all about the money.

(26,060 posts)about this nefarious Israeli lobby. You couldn't possibly be talking about AIPAC as they are Americans and have taken absolutely no position on the Hagel nomination so I wait with bated breath to hear all about it.

(9,462 posts)said something about how concerned they were about him and so on. I know J Street and Americans for Peace have both supported him but I thought AIPAC, American Jewish Committee, Anti-Defamation League, RJC, Nat's Jewish Democratic council and the Israel Project were all against. Do you have a better source of information? Most of what i've gotten has been from multiple articles and i'm not sure who the most reliable source of information is on that topic. Thanks

(26,060 posts)AIPAC:
The Daily Beast reported that AIPAC whose annual Policy Conference in DC I have attended for 20 years as a huge fan and supporter has chosen to sit the Hagel nomination out, desiring as they do a positive relationship with the Pentagon and believing that President Obama has enough votes to get him confirmed.

The ADL:
\n a major boost for Chuck Hagel, the Anti-Defamation League announced Monday that it will not oppose him for the position of defense secretary.
Senator Hagel would not have been my first choice, but I respect the presidents prerogative, Abraham H. Foxman, the national director of the ADL, said.

(26,060 posts)National Jewish Democratic Council:
The National Jewish Democratic Council, which has criticized Chuck Hagel for having a "questionable record on Israel," issued a statement Monday saying the group trusts he will follow President Obama's lead.
"President Barack Obama's unprecedented pro-Israel credentials are unquestionable, and setting policy starts and stops with the president. While we have expressed concerns in the past, we trust that when confirmed, former Sen. Chuck Hagel will follow the president's lead of providing unrivaled support for Israel -- on strategic cooperation, missile defense programs, and leading the world against Iran's nuclear program," the NJDC said.

What the heck is the RJC? I'm getting everything from Republican Jewish Council to Reaching Japanese for Christ.

(9,462 posts)that like AIPAC and Anti-Defamation they don't endorse candidates in Israel or US. It seems like they will give their opinion, but don't formally endorse or oppose candidates. That makes sense since they will have to deal with whoever Twins and opposing someone who eventually wins election or gets the job would really hurt the orgs until the next election.
Thanks again for the info

As Chuck Hagels critics line up, accusing him of being anti-Israel, the countrys biggest Israel lobby appears to be standing down. Eli Lake on a surprising move.
Opponent of Chuck Hagel's nomination to be secretary of defense have been lining up for battle, citing concerns about the former senators position on Israel.
Notably absent from the cast of critics: the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC, Washingtons largest and most well funded pro-Israel lobby.
The powerful lobby, which doesnt typically shy away from a fight, has decided to sit this one out, say several House and Senate staff members, as well as some pro-Israel activists in Washington.
Staffers and members are trying to find out what AIPAC thinks of Hagel, and we are not getting anything, one Senate Republican staff member said. Another Senate staff member said, AIPAC will be sitting this one out.

(24,692 posts)Former Sen. Chuck Hagel, President Obama's choice to lead the Defense Department, has generated some controversy, but is nevertheless well positioned to earn Senate confirmation. There's been some chatter about an unprecedented Republican filibuster -- no modern cabinet nominee has ever faced such obstructionism -- but there are more than enough votes to overcome the opposition.
So, it's over? With Hagel set to clear the Senate Armed Services Committee today, it's only a matter of time before the Nebraska Republican is sworn in, right? As Ali Gharib reported late last night, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has put a new roadblock between Hagel and confirmation -- and it's a doozy.
The problem is that the "committee's review of the nomination" will never be completed to the liking of Hagel's Republican opponents, because they've set an impossible bar for the nominee to clear. A Democratic official working on Hagel's confirmation told me: "What they're asking is unprecedented, and it's clear that it's information that he's unable to provide." The official noted that the U.S. had myriad national security concerns on its plate, not least of which was the 66,000 American troops deployed in Afghanistan right now.
Though it appeared the review process, and the scrutiny of Hagel's background, was complete, Cruz launched a new salvo, asking for financial information about private companies he was affiliated with but does not control. Hagel's already provided as much information as he has access to, including everything from his own personal holdings and investment portfolio, but he found some of Cruz' inquiries literally impossible to answer.
For the right-wing Texan and 24 of his Senate GOP allies, this means Hagel is being uncooperative and secretive.

I remember telling my wife that land stealing tea party freak would be an embarrassment to our state before she was finished. Hell, she is barely out of the starting gate and is already showing the rest of the country what a ditz she is.
