Obama predicts Pelosi will be speaker again soon

Source: Washington Post

President Obama predicted Thursday that if Democrats pursue an ambitious agenda, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) will soon have the speaker’s gavel back.

“It won’t be smooth, it won’t be simple, there will be frustrations, there will be times when you guys will be mad at me, and I’ll occasionally read about it.” he said. But if they keep focused, he said, ”I would expect that Nancy Pelosi is going to be speaker again pretty soon.”

But the president also appeared to be steeling House Democrats — who are more liberal than their Senate counterparts — for the need to remain open to concessions to moderate Democrats and Republicans not as eager to engage on the two domestic issues likely to dominate his State of the Union address next week — immigration and gun-control.

Obama spoke at a midday session at the annual House Democratic policy retreat, held at the tony Lansdowne Resort outside Leesburg. He addressed the group from his presidential podium in a large ballroom as lawmakers sat at round tables in casual dress.

If Democrats do all they can to work in favor of their constituents rather than side with corporate Republicans, the people will return the favor when they're up for re-election. It never ceases to amaze me that some Democrats forget that very simple yet very fundamental fact: scratch our back and we'll scratch yours.

President Obama understands this simple truth, and he's conveying it to the Democrats who have forgotten.

The republicans have heavily gerrymandered a number of districts, but they still haven't made all of those districts shoe-ins. At least two of the seven districts here in SC were close enough in 2012 that they could potentially go to a Dem next year. If enough people in those close districts throughout the country get sick of the tea bagger crazies and republican obstructionism, I think it's quite possible we'll have Speaker Pelosi again.

In short, if you’re still disappointed in Barack Obama, it’s only because you never understood whose job it was to produce change in the first place. But don’t take out your own failings in this regard on the rest of us...

I decided to not get angry, but present the facts. We're dealing with enough factually challenged rightwingers, we are supposed to know our facts before we spout off here. I blame the pervasive toxic media atmosphere that encourages sneering at Obama, Democrats and the Democratic Party as a sign of intellect. It's important to know the sources and who's paying to talk about us:

It's very obvoius when a district is gerrymandered.

Since the practice gives unfair advantage, it should
not be allowed. Why is it allowed to exist in today's
society?

If the house will not address the problem then who is it that needs to be contacted in order to put an end to the problem?

I would imagine it is the same group that can have an impact on
voter supression.

The Republicanaires are at a disadvantage now and are fighting with every little dirty trick in the book. This is the best time to make a full force effort to get all this crap stopped (wich should be considered illegal in the first place!).

Citizens United is another thing that should never have happened with a congress that is not bought and not playing by the rules.

Anybody have any ideas as to where to start? My congressperson?

they taking it up in a court action within the state of North Carolina? I would imagine citizens within the gerrymandered District can take the Party to court or the representative. If I found myself in a new gerrymandered District from my old District, then I would file a law suit against that representative for disenfranchising me or diluting my vote.

This state rule stuff really drives me nuts.
Here we have each stare allowed to make up whatever crap laws they want and they don't base it on the constituent desires. They just throw something together and then the people have to fight to get it reversed.

Look at all the crap going on with voter supression.

I will talk to my B-I-Law. He used to work for the elections dept in MA. I asked at Xmass and he said that MA has rules that need to be followed so that the district boundaries are redrawn after each sensus for the specific purpose of making sure they are fair.

With all these Republicants making all these anti-people laws in their states, it's going to take years to get all this crap straightened out. There needs to be some sort of oversight committee to tell a state when they are overstepping their legal bounds.

What a mess!

are in red states. If you take a look at the Governorships though, the Dems should be going hard after them in Florida, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvannia and Virginia. That is where the President's ground organization can help. Gaining those Governorships should help the Party on the local level.

Conservative Democrats may not be representing all of their constituents, but only the more conservative ones. Democrats can find candidates just like the Tea party to primary these candidates too. Just like the Republicans, more Liberal Democrats need to go into those Districts and communicate with people one on one. I do think there is a lot of race baiting going on, but it doesn't serve anyone's interests. Republican constiuents also have their best interests in Social Security or Medicare threatened. They are being lied to. They are on record now which is new. They need to take it in those elections and use it on the Republican candidate towards people benefiting from those programs.
