House Dems To Bring Victims Of Gun Violence To State Of The Union
PEMA LEVY 12:14 PM EST, SUNDAY FEBRUARY 10, 2013
Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) said Sunday that he and about 30 other House Democrats plan to bring victims of gun violence as their guests to President Obama's State of the Union address next week as part of the push for new gun safety legislation in the wake of the school massacre in Newtown, Conn.
"A young man named Sami Rahamim, who lost his father in a tragic event in Minneapolis, is going to be joining me," Ellison said on ABC's "This Week." "And Jim Langevin (Democrat of Rhode Island])and I and Rosa DeLauro (Democrat of Connecticut) have asked our colleagues. We've got about 30 members who are inviting victims of gun violence to be in the gallery. And we're really looking forward to -- to them being with us, because they -- they're witnesses to the need for sane, sensible reform in the area of gun violence prevention."

(47,992 posts)also decide that it's time to overthrow the government, without asking me?
Do I mis-understand their claim?

(39,171 posts)stop using the fringe gun owners to smear the rest of us.
The Supreme Court says we have the right to bear arms for self defense. It also says that guns can be regulated. That is what me and most gun owners believe.

(47,992 posts)want authentic support from people who really are honestly trying to figure out for themselves what to do, PLEASE reconsider your word choices. Why create problems where there don't necessarily have to be any?
Perhaps you can understand that this is the internet; there are ALL kinds of people posting under names that are not their real names (including yourself, I might observe) & saying everything imaginable under the sun, so maybe you can see why SOME people just need clarification about the various actors out there. If all of you are not crazy-militia, then it would also be logical that not all of us are about "smear" anything.

(8,032 posts)The Framers were pretty clear that a government is legitimate only as long as it expresses and executes the will of the people.
Read the Declaration of Independence. Lincoln, who made the Declaration the centerpiece of his philosophy, argued that the Declaration states the principles through which the United States Constitution should be interpreted. (McPherson, Second American Revolution, 126.)
Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms (of government) those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny.
Every generation needs a new revolution.
Both quotes are from Thomas Jefferson.
Bottom line: dissent is patriotic, and it's the responsibility of the people not to tolerate an illegitimate government. One hopes it's a remedy that's never needed.

(25,183 posts)The GOP can bring people who have sucessfully defended themselves with weapons in their own homes. What would either side be able to say that we don't already know about how they feel?

(57,936 posts)Those who actually defended themselves from gun violence with guns?
Or the victims of gun violence and their survivors?
I would bet on the latter group.

(25,183 posts)Only the reporting. My prediction: Nothing gets done in Congress about guns, with the possible exception of some meaningless limitation on rounds in a clip or magazine. Adam Lanza showed us that he was prepared to bring as many of them as he could stuff in his pockets.

(51,122 posts)As the country blues, gun control will grow and grow.
And excuse fabricators like you will be silenced.
customerserviceguy
(25,183 posts)Yes, I'll give you that one, except for the totally private sales of firearms, which is a virtual impossibility. And that will be the main means by which criminals procure guns, with stealing them a close second.
Excuse fabricator, indeed, I'm just telling you the reality of gun legislation making it through a Rethuglican House, with significant Blue Dog support, or in this case, nonsupport. It's not going to go any further from that, no matter that it was finally white kids who were killed in CT.

(25,183 posts)to avoid that impression, mark my words. They will find ways to pay for their side to come to the State of the Union address, or any other forum, if they feel they need to match numbers.

(34,825 posts)those numbers are never EVER going to match up.

We don't have the votes = The lobbiests don't want me to vote for the bill and their money is more important that citizens lives.
I also want Reid to explain to these people why he back off on reforming the Filibuster.
