GOP strategist: We need Rubio because ‘he knows who Tupac is’
By Jonathan Terbush
Sunday, February 10, 2013 15:33 EST

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio has been hailed by many Republicans as the savior of the party, what with his youth, charisma and Cuban heritage.

Yet that’s not all he has to offer. According to one Republican strategist, the freshman Florida Senator also knows a little something about 90s rap music to boot.

Sunday on ABC’s This Week, GOP operative Nicole Wallace argued that Rubio was good for the party as a whole because, “he knows who Tupac is.” That knowledge, she said, proved that he could connect to young voters, a demographic the GOP has typically sruggled to court.

~snip~
Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) made that very point during the show.

“It’s like lipstick on a pig,” he said. “I mean, the bottom line is, the Republicans have a core values problem, not a ‘who knows who Tupac Shakur is’ problem.”

Sun Feb 10, 2013, 05:56 PM
Feb 2013

The GOP once again shows how tone deaf and culturally ignorant they are. Just because Rubio speaks Spanish doesn't mean that all the Spanish-Speaking people who are not Cuban will identify with him and vote republican. In fact, his being Cuban might be a detriment. Most people don't realize that Cubans who enter the US are considered "refugees" not immigrants. The congress passed some laws favorable to Cubans back when we were fighting the evil Communist threat and Castro had overthrown the US's puppet dictator Batista.

Also, there is the "wet feet/dry feet" thing. A Cuban who does sneak out of Cuba via a raft or other means and makes it to dry land in the US is not deported back to Cuba. Those found in the water are. This policy applies to no other Latino or Hispanic group. Any Mexican caught in the Rio Grande or on dry land on the US side of it is an illegal immigrant - period.

So there are special laws that allow Cubans an easier entry to the US that do not apply to any other group of foreigners. This has caused some anger among the Hatians, and several Latin and South American peoples that Cubans are treated "special." This fact may not endear many to Rubio.

But the blissfully ignorant GOP is still grouping all Spanish-Speaking people together as one group they have to win over. Not the multitude of different groups who are very proud of their individual and unique heritage and don't like being lumped together with everyone else.

On Edit: Oh, and these are not dumb people. They see a token Spanish-Speaker for what he his. An insincere attempt to convince them the GOP cares about Latino and Hispanic peoples just to get votes. They know that's all that matters and the GOP policies will still be there to screw them along with the poor and the elderly after they get the vote.

"The Republican leadership in the Congress tapped Jindal, seen as the fast emerging national leader of the party, a day after the White House announced that Obama would deliver his maiden State of the Union Address as President at the American Congress on February 24.

"Governor Jindal embodies what I have long said: the Republican Party must not be simply the party of 'opposition', but the party of better solutions," Boehner said in a statement.

know what the Bay of Pigs was?

And then she went on to be the personal shopper and outfitter for sarah palin in 2008? Well, MAYBE she knows a few things about shopping and accessorizing.

But she clearly doesn't know enough to realize that - just because you've heard of Tupak, or even know a few things about him, that can't gloss over sheer willful ignorance of changing times, changing attitudes, and changing demographics. Maybe she thinks cosmetics is all you need, but this is not claiming you have a clear complexion when you've simply masked the zits with zit-cover-up.

I watch the Food Network a lot and I know who the Iron Chefs are. That does NOT mean I myself am therefore adept and/or experienced in a gourmet kitchen in a high-stakes chef competition.

The GOP believes that they don't need fresh ideas, just fresh marketing. They have no intention whatsoever of performing any self analysis or changing their views one iota. Instead, they'll focus exclusively on messaging, gerrymandering, and election rigging to get the power they want. How do these guys manage to sleep at night knowing - as they surely must by now - that they're striving to rig the system in order to keep themselves in power despite the proven fact that they don't represent the majority? What do they tell themselves that makes that palatable to them?
