States make decisions about roles in insurance marketplaces

Florida, New Jersey and Tennessee will not partner with the federal government to create the online insurance marketplaces required under President Obamas health-care law, the states governors announced Friday, ending months of speculation and starting a new chapter in the implementation of the law.
The exchanges in those states and others that have declined to set up their own exchanges or partner with the federal government will be run by federal officials, at least through 2014.
Republicans Rick Scott of Florida and Chris Christie of New Jersey have been vocal critics of the law. They had said previously that their states would not participate in the creation of the exchanges, a key part of the law meant to help individuals and small businesses find affordable coverage.
But they were among several Republican governors who had come under enormous pressure from advocates in their states to at least partially participate by helping to select the insurance plans included in the exchanges and spearheading some outreach efforts to encourage enrollment. The deadline to enter into such a partnership with the Department of Health and Human Services was Friday.

(1,245 posts)can't find it's ass with both hands so I suppose it's for the best they're not involved with the exchanges. Pity (but totally expected) that Florida AGAIN takes a back seat to progress.

(20,176 posts)The company he founded made millions charging Uncle Sam for procedures that were never performed...they were under investigation the entire time he was running...but nothing could be tied back to him. I believe other executives went to prison; I wasn't following the story that closely but I recall hearing about it. Perhaps someone else will come along with the details.

(5,610 posts)I am not surprised at all. I hear comments all the time about how terrible (our medical system is the worse that I have seen) medical care will be under Obamacare.
I know that it is mainly health insurance enrichment, but I have seen people who needed and could not afford health care, now get the insurance they need. Most medical care facilities demand pre-payment here unless you have health insurance...it's all about the money.
