Kerry: Budget Cuts May Force Reduction In Israel Aid

Source: REUTERS

Automatic spending cuts set to take effect in the US next month could "lead to reductions in military assistance to Israel, Jordan and Egypt, undermining our commitment to their security at such a volatile time," US Secretary of State John Kerry said in comments publicized on Thursday.

Across-the-board cuts, known as "sequestration," set to begin on March 1, would take $2.6 billion out of the budget for the US State Department and USAID, America's development assistance agency, Kerry said.

"Cuts of this magnitude would seriously impair our ability to execute our vital missions of national security, diplomacy and development," he wrote in a letter to Senator Barbara Mikulski, chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations.

The warning from Kerry, who took over from predecessor Hillary Clinton 10 days ago, follows similarly stark alerts from Pentagon chief Leon Panetta and other Obama administration officials over cuts that will take place unless lawmakers and US President Barack Obama reach an agreement to stop them.

started out as a "Farm Subsidy".

At any rate they can suck it up & tighten their belts & any other austerity cheer anyone can think of.

Oh and all military cuts to everyone is a-ok (xcept health care to vets) is fine with me.

Hey DOD suckers! Fat white festering suckers of tax money! There is a shortage of OTR truck drivers. Get in to school asap & suffer like every one else. Most of the folk making money off DOD are more like Reagans "Caddy driving welfare queens", than any other real life example AFAIAC.

What comes to mind is a real old song "get a job".

4. Health care in Israel. . .

From Wikipedia (I know, lousy source, but the point remains valid):

Health care in Israel is universal and participation in a medical insurance plan is compulsory. Health care coverage is administered by a small number of organizations, with funding from the government. All Israeli citizens are entitled to the same Uniform Benefits Package, regardless of which organization they are a member of, and treatment under this package is government-funded for all citizens regardless of their financial means. Additional coverage for non-essential treatments can be arranged for a fee, which is generally shared between a citizen and their employer. Generally, health care in Israel is of high-quality and is delivered in an efficient and effective manner. Partly as a result of this, at an overall 82 years, Israelis enjoy the fourth-longest life expectancy in the world as of 2012.

I guess we could have nice things, too, if someone else paid a chunk of our military budget.

Everybody against sequestration is now pro-apartheid.

We've just divided the US political spectrum into two camps of racists.

Not that some people aren't already long-term members of that pecular kind of mental prison camp already, as evidenced by an earlier post in this thread.

The truly sad thing is that this is part of the whole dehumanizing of the Palestinians, other Arabic peoples, or just people of color in general.

They are considered lesser and inferior persons of not much worth.

Anybody that thinks this way is fucked up.

We're going to have to cut our aid to Israel? Oh, I'm sure that's going to happen. When swine soar high among the puffy clouds it will!

Every soldier and sailor in the U.S. military will have to get by on two meals a day and just one shoe apiece before that is ever going to happen.

Who ever knew Kerry was such a comedian?

Frankly, I'm finding this sequestration plan a good avenue for helping to get our federal priorities in order.

My hunch is that the immediate pain of social programs reductions will make Washington rectify those cuts rather quickly. In the mean time, the rest of the country may discover that cuts to the military and things like cuts in aid to Israel are not as critical as some special interests have led many to believe.

It had better! Given that we would be cutting science, disease prevention and study, environmental protection, our bloated OWN military, and may other things, aid to the Israelis should be cut at least as much as other programs. If it is protected from sequester cuts there should be hell to pay.

THE BELOW INFORMATION COMES FROM "THINK PROGRESS"'. AND I THINK EVERYONE SHOULD GET AND READ DAVID CAY JOHNSTONS BOOK CALLED " THE FINE PRINT", IT IS AMAZING.

SO WHAT DID LEVIN DO.
DID HE BRING FORTH ANOTHER BILL TO STOP THIS SCAM, OR DID HE WORRY ABOUT THE WORTHLESS FILIBUSTER RULE THAT THE SPINELESS REID SHOOK HANDS WITH GOOD OLD TURTLE LIPS MCCONNELL---WHICH HE, LEVIN FOUGHT AGAINST THE REFORM TO THE FILIBUSTER DEBACLE---HOWS THAT GOING BOYS--ASK HAGAEL AND OBAMA AND WHICH IS NOT AND I REPEAT NOT IN THE CONSTITUTIONAL FORM OF GOVERNMENT AND DID HE LEVIN BRING FORTH ONE BILL OR SIGN ON AS CO-SPONSOR TO THE BERNIE SANDERS OR GO INTO THE WELL OF THE SENATE AND STAND SHOULDER TO SHOULDER WITH SANDERS ON THIS LEGISLATION TO QUIT THE BELOW BULLSHIT---DON'T THINK SO.
JOHN STEWART HAS IT RIGHT--WHERE IS THE MEDIA---NOWHERE.

Between 2008 and 2011, 26 major corporations were able to pay no federal corporate income tax, despite making a combined $205 billion in profits. According to a new report from Citizens for Tax Justice, Facebook joined that illustrious club last year, receiving $429 million in tax rebates despite making more than $1 billion in profits:

Earlier this month, the Facebook Inc. released its first “10-K” annual financial report since going public last year. Hidden in the report’s footnotes is an amazing admission: despite $1.1 billion in U.S. profits in 2012, Facebook did not pay even a dime in federal and state income taxes.

Instead, Facebook says it will receive net tax refunds totaling $429 million.

Facebook’s income tax refunds stem from the company’s use of a single tax break, the tax deductibility of executive stock options. That tax break reduced Facebook’s federal and state income taxes by $1,033 million in 2012, including refunds of earlier years’ taxes of $451 million

Facebook will be able to carry further tax rebates forward, according to CTJ, for a total of $3 billion in tax deductions.

“When profitable corporations can use the stock option tax deduction to pay zero corporate income taxes for years on end, average taxpayers are forced to pick up the tax burden,” said Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) when this issue arose as Facebook was preparing its initial public offering last year. This tax preference for corporations costs the U.S. about $2 billion in revenue per year.
