Call-Centre Workers Expose Detusche Telekom Double Standards to Global Panel of Inquiery Into Worker

Source: CWA

Note: Sharan Burrow, head of the global union movement representing 174 million workers, joined a workers’ forum in Charleston, S.C., today, and with other labor, community, religious and student leaders, heard from T-Mobile USA workers on their concerns about jobs and having a union voice. Here is the ITUC report:

Charleston, South Carolina -- Call-centre workers from T-Mobile USA, owned by Deutsche Telekom, gave evidence exposing the stark difference in workplace conditions between the US and Germany to an international hearing today in Charleston.

The hearing came after a week-long visit to South Carolina workplaces from Berlin based call centre workers from the ver.di union in Germany. ver.di is Germany’s largest union, representing 2 million workers.

The multi national communications company negotiates with the German union for workplace conditions with union representation a key part of the company culture, but the management does not allow the same practices in the USA.

Notes for editors:T-Mobile employs more than 400 workers in a Charleston call centre and two retail stores, and about 20,000 call center, technicians and retail store workers in the U.S.

T-Mobile USA is owned by Deutsche Telekom, a transnational communications company with operations in fifty countries. It entered the US market in 2001.

T-Mobile workers in the US have joined TU, a joint effort by CWA and the German services union ver.di.

...and there's lots of profit from exploitation. Ikea, for instance. They treat American workers far, far worse than counterparts in the EU, simply because they can. It's profitable to do so. And lets not forget Ikea profiting from East German, slave labor.

I do truly love the CWA. My father was a 30+ year member, back when he worked for pre break up Ma Bell.

then the US is the colony of Germany (and Europe) which feels entitled to profit off low wages, lack of health care and poor living standard of US labor.

I know that the British feel "entitled" to cheap prescription drugs subsidized by sky high prices charged to Americans, because the Guardian said so a few years ago.
