Report: Bill would set an 8-year path to residency

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The White House is circulating a draft immigration bill that would create a new visa for illegal immigrants living in the United States and allow them to become legal permanent residents within eight years, according to a report published online Saturday by USA Today.
President Barack Obama's bill would create a "Lawful Prospective Immigrant" visa for the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants living in the United States. The bill includes more security funding and requires business owners to adopt a system for verifying the immigration status of new hires within four years, the newspaper said.
USA Today reported that the bill would require that immigrants pass a criminal background check, submit biometric information and pay fees to qualify for the new visa. Immigrants who served more than a year in prison for a criminal conviction or were convicted of three or more crimes and were sentenced to a total of 90 days in jail would not be eligible. Crimes committed in other countries that would bar immigrants from legally entering the country would also be ineligible.
Those immigrants facing deportation would be eligible to apply for the visa, the newspaper reported. Immigrants would be eligible to apply for a green card within eight years, if they learn English and U.S. history and government, and they would later be eligible to become U.S. citizens.

(69,014 posts)I hope the also add stiff fines and even jail time for "employers" who break the law and hire "illegals" so they can exploit them so they can save money! As long as an employer can get away with hiring the those not legal, nothing will change.
The whole "illegal" immigration problem started when employers wanted to increase their own profits, lower wages, and not have to pay any fringe benefits to their work force. It has been going on for decades and it has gotten worse since the 1984 so called "immigration" plan which never really enforced the laws against the employer, but simply ignored the fact the were breaking the law and exploiting those who came here looking for work, but not through the legal process.
I also noticed in the link where Rubio said such a bill would not pass. It's the same old thing, republicans won't agree with anything the president, or the democrats, come up with, yet they have no working plan of their own. Until enough republicans get their heads out of their ass and work for a "real" immigration plan, nothing will happen.

(6,045 posts)I don't any immigration bill that would actually work will ever get through the House...I know Republicans in the House blocking immigration reform would suck but if they do I would imagine that would wake folks up for the coming mid-term when we on the Left tend to stay home.
We must have a way of getting folks to the polls in 2014 or the Republicans will be able to continue blocking everything!!
