Cancer charity halts grants to Planned Parenthood
NEW YORKThe nation's leading breast-cancer charity, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, is halting its partnerships with Planned Parenthood affiliatescreating a bitter rift, linked to the abortion debate, between two iconic organizations that have assisted millions of women.
The change will mean a cutoff of hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants, mainly for breast exams.
Planned Parenthood says the move results from Komen bowing to pressure from anti-abortion activists. Komen says the key reason is that Planned Parenthood is under investigation in Congressa probe launched by a conservative Republican who was urged to act by anti-abortion groups.
The rupture, which has not been publicly announced as it unfolded, is wrenching for some of those who've learned about it and admire both organizations....

(12,233 posts)we hear about the horror stories of women struggling for assistance when they have breast cancer and we are no closer to an actual cure, one should wonder where all that money is going?
I would give directly to PP.... they are on the front lines.. the other organization is just collecting money and handing out pink ribbons.

(23,796 posts)Of course, Planned Parenthood. They are losing over $600,000 in grants for breast cancer mammograms because of this.
Also, the American Cancer Society will let you earmark your donation for breast cancer research.
Another link for mammogram support is the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
This is just sickening to watch unfold. Something that should never have been politicized - breast cancer prevention and research - just got that way due to KFTC's incredibly ill-advised move.

(4,847 posts)many cannot say they are "pro-life" unless they also are against war (that kills children), against the death penalty and against child hunger and poverty. What they are against is women having control over birth control. when it comes to a health choice, I value my daughter more than an embryo.
Planned Parenthood does more screenings, and just a small portion on abortion. Yet, they choose to focus on abortions. a choice should be between the woman, her doctor, her family and if applicable, her church. The government should have no say, period.
Yeah, this organization seems to be a mega money maker with high end administration costs.

(1,979 posts)I just sent them a letter expressing my feelings. I wonder how they would feel if someone was pregnant, poor and found out they had cancer. Would they have them turned out onto the street due to their choices?
How ironic that a "charity" that tries to help extend the lives of women, would pull funding from a resource that helps women be healthy.
I hope that PP gets HUGE donations from this ignorant move.

(14,061 posts)Who I'm sure are just giddy over this "victory."
I know people have a lot of problems with Komen, but the real losers in this are the women who will no longer be able to have breast exams.
And what's more, the same people who are gloating over this are also -- most likely to a person -- against any kind of universal health care.
Pro life my ass. Classic oxymoron. Emphasis on MORON.

(26,549 posts)There were tens of thousands of 'referrals' from PP to doctors.
It's reasonable to estimate this decision will cause thousands more women to die from breast cancer. Not exactly a good thing for a 'breast cancer charity' to do.
SunSeeker
(51,697 posts)As reported in Huff Post, newly installed Koman VP Karen Handel, a rabid anti-abortion, anti-birth control Republican, pushed the move to cut off Planned Parenthood. Over the past five years, the Komen organization has given Planned Parenthood health centers the funds to provide nearly 170,000 clinical breast exams to low-income and uninsured women. That works out to thousands of women who were able to survive because they found their breast cancer when it was still treatable. If Handel cares more about fetuses than preventing breast cancer deaths, why doesn't she quit Koman and go work for Operation Rescue? I guess Koman pays better.

(12 posts)I'm not giving money to S.G.K. ever again; they spend most of it on legal fees anyway - fighting to prosecute and persecute anyone who dares to use the phrase "...for the Cure" while raising money FOR THEM prior to going through all of S.G.K.'s corporate red-tape!
Enough.
If they actually cared about helping women, they would be Planned Parenthood's biggest supporters. Instead, they will have the blood of a lot of women in poverty - and those with meager funds - who die of breast cancer for lack of care on their hands.
Thanks S.G.K.!!

I am so pissed off about this. Many years ago, when I was still a fertile female, I was grateful for PP's help. This reminds me that it's time to pay back the organization that helped me control my own destiny.
