The bias of the media is so blatant now, they are ALL Fox News. I see no to little difference om any of them, even if they wave a token 'liberal' in our faces to seduce us into watching the other 99.999% conservative slop. The stuff served up on television in the fifties was like being slowly suffocated. This is much worse.

...but we have now crossed-over into the beginnings of the very dystopian world that Orwell and Huxley wrote about. We've actually been in it for quite some time now, but we didn't see it as well. Because they no longer go to the lengths they once did in order to hide it from us.

They're now folks who carry gossip and direction our attention to shiny things.

Sometimes, they are propagandists.

Almost never are they journalists worthy of respect.

Finally, with all due respect to untrained citizen journalists, about 95% of them are nowhere near as good as they believe they are.

It's a pretty sleazy bit of legislation on the part of the Republicans but Obama accepted it and signed it into law. He is the head of state, the leader of our country! He better own it. That's what leaders do. That's what makes him responsible to bring the nitwits in congress to some kind of consensus and resolve this fregin mess.

And don't Republicans bear a responsibility for trying to resolve it as well?

I think the problem is that Republicans are given a free pass. They demand that President Obama "show leadership" by trying bid against himself and read their mind and come up with a plan that makes him happy. Of course, they never are. This is why I think President Obama is doing the right thing by setting forth his proposed plan, and waiting for Republicans to say what they want with respect to cuts to entitlements.

They should pay dearly in the midterm elections for being entrenched in ideology over the realities of running a nation. However, if there is a successful outcome to this budget debacle, were not going to give a ticker tape parade for the Republicans/teabaggers. The White will, and rightly so, take the credit. Similarly if there is a failure, the executive branch will have to accept accountability and thus be ultimately responsible.

the deal he signed had the language in it that averted the default on the nation's debt last year... so was he supposed to allow the nation to default on its obligations? You might try seeing the grey in the matter instead of focusing on the black and whites of it.

The rethugs are wholly and totally responsible for where this is right now--they refuse to adopt revenue increases from the wealthy and corporations. The "American people" they're talking about are those who fund their re-election campaigns, not those who are going to be quite hurt by this.

When Ryan, Boehner and those of their ilk sat around last summer in their circle jerk behind their sequestration victory, they were pleased as punch that finally, they'd be able to throw social programs overboard and leave a lot of people to shift for themselves. Now that we're less than a week away from that happening and they see that their policy is failing before their eyes, it's now President Obama's problem. No, not hardly. And the American public sees that clearly.

I don't think the story disproves or is inconsistent with Boehner's version.

The plan may well have originated with the Republicans, but this story is not definitive proof that it did.

Maybe's Maddow's film clips are. I don't know. I did not see those.

The bill was the final chance in a series of proposals to resolve the 2011 United States debt-ceiling crisis, which featured bitter divisions between the parties and also pronounced splits within them. Earlier ideas included the Obama-Boehner $4 trillion "Grand Bargain",[13] the House Republican Cut, Cap and Balance Act, and the McConnell-Reid "Plan B" fallback. All eventually failed to gain enough general political or specific Congressional support to move into law, as the midnight August 2, 2011, deadline for an unprecedented U.S. sovereign default drew nearer and nearer.[14]

Ultimately, the solution came from White House National Economic Council Director Gene Sperling, who, on July 12, 2011, proposed a compulsory trigger that would go into effect if another agreement was not made on tax increases and/or budget cuts equal to or greater than the the debt ceiling increase by a future date. The intent was to secure the commitment of both sides to future negotiation by means of an enforcement mechanism that would be unpalatable to Republicans and Democrats alike. President Obama agreed to the plan. House Speaker John Boehner expressed reservations, but also agreed.[15]

On July 26, 2011, White House Budget Director Jack Lew and White House Legislative Affairs Director Rob Nabors met with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to discuss the plan. Reid, like Boehner several days before, was initially opposed to the idea, but was eventually convinced to go along with it, with the understanding that the sequester was intended as an enforcement tool rather than a true budget proposal. It was originally proposed by the White House. It received bi-partisan support, passed by congress and was signed by President Obama.
