I live within walking distance of Canada.

I have a valid passport, NEXUS card and no criminal record.

I am a veteran who once held Top Secret clearance.

Yet, almost every time I go to Canada, when I come back, I am given the full grilling by CBP when I come back, as if it is a criminal act to leave the country.

I rarely, if ever, have trouble from the Canada Border Services Agency. Usually it's "where ya goin'? how long ya gonna be here? got any weapons? OK, have a good time."

Coming back it's an entirely different story. I was once held for a "random" check for almost two hours; my passport and cell phone were held and not returned to me until I was finally cleared. Our glorious SCOTUS has ruled that the Fourth Amendment does not apply to border crossings.

The last time I went book/music shopping in Canada (where you can get things you cannot easily get here) I told the CBP officer on my return that I went shopping in Canada. He scowled at me and said "no-one shops in Canada, they come HERE to shop!"

I hope this "crisis" will shake that agency up, but I'm probably hoping in vain.
