Republicans Block Obama Nominee To Appeals Court, Again
Source: AP/TPM
WASHINGTON (AP) Senate Republicans have blocked the confirmation of federal appeals court nominee Caitlin Halligan for the second time, denying President Barack Obama a key judicial appointment.
Republicans say Halligan is too liberal to sit on U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia and cited citing her work on lawsuits against gun manufacturers. The National Rifle Association opposed her nomination.
Democrats say the effort to block her is about maintaining a conservative majority on a key appellate court.
A majority of senators, 51, supported her nomination, but Democrats needed 60 votes in the 100 member Senate to get it past Republican objections.

(11,464 posts)AFter all, Charlie Brown always won everything in the end, though it did not seem so in the middle of the game.
Charlie Brown though looked 10 steps ahead and attained victory each time.
After all, he was never wrong.
He picked the nicest Christmas tree there was.
But it took 10 steps later to see it.
Harry Reid and President Obama are ropingthedopes again and again
Keep your eye on the long term prize. We are getting there.

It's a shame people get hurt, but its like a cure for a major disease.
There comes a cure, and everyone from that point forward is in no danger of dying.
YES of course it is very sad for those who are hurt prior, but long term, 99% end up saved.
(and who is to say, had the Peanuts crew grown up, that Charlie Brown would not have married Lucy, but by then, she would not be able to bully him around, and their marriage would be one of love and equalness.
So in effect, long term, Charlie Brown pulled the football from Lucy.
She just doesn't know it yet.)

(2,730 posts)and maybe he needs to be primaried from the Left. If the Democrats win the Senate again, then someone needs to challnhge Reid for leadership. And if I was the President, I would have a problem with Reid's leadership and getting judicial appointments through. When is enough, enough? The Republicans have gotten ridiculous. The Democratic Party Leadership need to stop caving to Republicans when they have the majority or get out of office.

Statement by the President on Republican Filibuster of Caitlin Halligan
I am deeply disappointed that despite support from a majority of the United States Senate, a minority of Senators continues to block the nomination of Caitlin Halligan to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Nearly two and a half years after being nominated, Ms. Halligan continues to wait for a simple up-or-down vote. In the past, filibusters of judicial nominations required extraordinary circumstances, and a Republican Senator who was part of this agreement articulated that only an ethics or qualification issue not ideology would qualify. Ms. Halligan has always practiced law with the highest ethical ideals, and her qualifications are beyond question. Furthermore, her career in public service and as a law enforcement lawyer, serving the citizens of New York, is well within the mainstream.
Todays vote continues the Republican pattern of obstruction. My judicial nominees wait more than three times as long on the Senate floor to receive a vote than my predecessors nominees. The effects of this obstruction take the heaviest toll on the D.C. Circuit, considered the Nations second-highest court, which now has only seven active judges and four vacancies. Until last month, for more than forty years, the court has always had at least eight active judges and as many as twelve. A majority of the Senate agrees that Ms. Halligan is exactly the kind of person who should serve on this court, and I urge Senate Republicans to allow the Senate to express its will and to confirm Ms. Halligan without further delay.
