'Snowquester' doesn't pan out in DC; state of emergency in Virginia

They'd hoped to trade political potshots for wet snowballs.
Instead, the storm billed as "Snowquester" is turning out to be nothing more than a big wet blanket for members of the Washington D.C. Snowball Fight Association. The group had planned a big showdown in DuPont Circle, where a few years ago 3,000 people turned out for a humdinger of a fight.

The dire forecast issued Tuesday prompted the federal government to close offices in the nation's capital, but emergency workers and telecommuters were expected to be on duty, according to the Office of Personnel Management.

(38,458 posts)Even this AM they were calling for 6-10 inches just north of DC. It stopped snowing about 2 hrs ago. Just a little slush is all and it seems to be melting. Forecasters forgot this is March.

(9,893 posts)seem to have a particular panic when it comes to snow. I'm from the Philadelphia area, not known for its calm in a snow storm, and we are hardened mountaineers compared to Washington. Worked for a company that had an office in Washington. I had to go there one time the morning after a storm. Got up early, shovelled and got a push out the driveway and I was on my way. Got to the office in DC and no one was there due to the "storm." Not sure what the problem is.

(118,295 posts)If I lived in DC, I think I'd hunker down at home whenever there was precipitation at below-freezing precipitation, just to avoid being smashed by somebody with a lot of money and connections from somewhere else in the US who thought it was the perfect time to drive 85 mph

(22,000 posts)Especially those who aren't use to driving in snow. If one or two inches of snow accumulate on the ground, most everything shuts down. Highway 26 going west from Portland toward the coast is notoriously bad when Portland gets ice or snow. I remember in college a few times they completely shut it down (I'm talking about police roadblocks). One of the entrances to 26 is just on the other side of the campus of the university I attended.

(63,912 posts)husband said I was tempting fate and if it snows a lot here it's all my fault.
I think climate change and global warming is pretty evident here...but, I am no scientist so I dunno

(63,912 posts)I bet my neighbor last week that his "snow mountain" would be melted by April 1. He took the bet. Today the city came by and removed most of his snow mountain. I called him and he said "I'm calling off my bet!" We both got a hearty laugh over that one...

Nothing but rain and about 15 minutes ago, they changed to one half inch in the evening.

(25,415 posts)Now that was a Snowpocalypse. It was over my 8 year old's head. 5 to 10 inches is a typical storm for us. But just slush? Nothing.

(63,912 posts)But nobody listens to me. Look, it's March, not january, which would be an entirely different story.
I can push the snow away with the shovel from my sidewalk when it is really slushy...

(24,347 posts)Every goddamn storm is the STORM OF THE CENTURY. Hell, now they're even naming them. It's gotten to the point where the NOAA is saying "Please, don't call the storm 'Nemo'...we didn't do that, it wasn't us."

(12,296 posts).... you'd have thought aliens were landing or something. We got all of 2 inches of slushy snow and during rush hour one of the talking heads was 'reporting live' and actually said " ... and if you stand still for a few minutes, you have to brush it off! (GASP!!)"
Seriously people, let me know when we're getting a foot with -30 windchills & 40 mph winds. Otherwise it's just winter.

(1,014 posts)How the government responds to the Navajo reservation here. They live on the land, and the winter trashes their roads. They even had a bridge collapse, that took them to civil action. It has not been fixed. Just because the natives get federal checks each month doesn't mean you forget about them! They are people too, and mostly vote democratic! We've wrecked their land and they are living the old way. A few modern exceptions like electricity and running water. Usage of a vehicle. They don't have computers or Internet. They love living in their own way, with minor convinces. If a loved one is hurt and they cannot help them, they do turn to western medicine. If the roads are impassable, or ravaged by storms, there is no help for them. They do not have phone lines, or cell phones. I feel for them. I've worked with a lot of them and they are hard working people. I just wish the government would look at the natives as not leeches, however the people we stole their country from, and that we need to take of them!!
Sorry, I live in New Mexico, and I love my country, just not how we treat people.
