SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - A lion killed a person on Wednesday at a private wild animal sanctuary in Central California, authorities said.
The person was attacked and fatally injured after getting into a cage with the lion at Cat Haven sanctuary in Dunlap, Calif., Cal Fire spokesman Ryan Michaels told The Associated Press.
The facility, which is licensed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, is about 45 miles east of Fresno in the Sierra Nevada foothills.
Michaels suspects the lion was put down because law enforcement officers at the scene fired shots, and the Fresno County sheriff's office said on the radio that the animal had been secured.

DUNLAP, Calif. (AP) - A female intern-volunteer was killed Wednesday by a lion at a private wild animal park in Central California, the founder of the facility said.
Cat Haven founder and executive director Dale Anderson was crying as he read a one-sentence statement about the fatal mauling at the exotic animal zoo he has operated since 1993.
The intern was attacked and killed when she entered the lion's enclosure, he said.
He refused to take questions from reporters, but extended thoughts and prayers to the victim's friends and relatives.

(4,150 posts)Why in the hell would anybody get into a cage with a lion? I'm assuming that this person wasn't one of the employees responsible for anything like this. Too bad he/she was killed, but REALLY too bad the lion had to die because of his?/her? foolishness.

Shame the cat suffered for an idiot's folly.

(28,581 posts)If the woman was the owner of the cat, then maybe mental illness. More likely the young volunteer made a mistake and it cost her her life.

(23,864 posts)...conclusions you jumped to from the brief article might be, shall we say, misleading?
The reason why I bring this up is I've read of a number of serious injuries which happen to interns at these sanctuaries when they're taking care of their duties which also happen after hours. Here's an article I posted last year, to give you an idea what I'm talking about.
While the article indicates the person was killed because they entered a cage with a lion, it's not clear whether they knew a lion was in the cage at the time. An unsuspecting person could have gone into the cage to perform maintenance under the belief that he animal was properly restrained and been set upon and killed.
That's not really amusing to you guys, is it? Or maybe it's all a big joke?

(28,581 posts)Either the woman herself or a coworker. Sadly, you just can't make mistakes around these predators.

(9,291 posts)occurred at the Bronx zoo several years back. A woman was working on one side of the tiger enclosure, but didn't know that one of the gates were open. She was also killed.
I just wish they didn't have to kill the lion. They probably did to get her remains, I just with they had another way to do it without killing the lion. Not to mention, I heard on CNN that he was caged with a female lion. Maybe she was getting close to coming into heat, if that was happening then this would be the result.

(13,985 posts)Humans should always keep distance and be super cautios around wild animals. Captivity doesn't tame them, it rather pisses them off even more IMO.

(28,581 posts)Horrifying for the victim, the other workers at the haven, the girls family, the officer who had to put it down and even the poor lion who was just being a lion.
The saddest thing is that we even need to have these big cat sanctuaries. Wild animals need to be wild animals not suburban house pets.

(13,685 posts)Was a volunteer once at such a place. Standing outside a lady lion's cage one day, and having her look at me like a piece of meat, made me seriously reconsider my activity. C'ya later was my response.

(13,685 posts)A 300 pound lion growling at you will make your hair stand on end.
Being a piece of meat is not so bad, being face to face with something that will really eat you alive is a whole 'nuther feeling.

(68,868 posts)You never let anyone get in the same enclosure as a lion/tiger etc.

(3,867 posts)I mean, yes it is in a zoo an all but it still a LION. This wasn't a pet, its was a caged carnivore. It's instinct is to hunt kill and eat. I fell for the family of the person killed but at the same time isn't there some implied risk when you go into a LION's cage.
Sunlei

(22,651 posts)I've worked at facilities with wild animals (and domestic species) with employees and volunteer workers. Sometimes people make a mistake that could be fatal, especially people who don't really have the years of training behind them.
It's never the animals fault.

(3,867 posts)I hate to hear stories like this. A wild animal is held captive, then does something that comes natural, and dies for it.
Mrs. Overall
(6,839 posts)I can. My daughter is in the same program at the same school that this young woman recently graduated from in Washington State. My daughter, being a biologist, will also do volunteer work with animals and I pray to God that nothing so horrific happens to her.
I can't believe the lack of empathy displayed in this post. I'm sure mistakes were made. People work with dangerous animals in accredited facilities, but that doesn't mean they are "intoxicated" "stupid" "deserve the Darwin Award."
The pain the family must be going through breaks my heart. Their daughter, like my daughter, was probably a compassionate, scientifically-minded kid who just wanted to make a difference in the world.
Shame on those Duers who mocked this horrible incident.

(37,748 posts)I think those who mock her are doing so merely out of a desire to feel more clever about themselves than they in fact, are.
And as for shame? Well, I imagine shame is the last thing they concern themselves with, and is merely another target for their self-validating ridicule.
Unfortunately, with the vast amount of pain in this world, many feel it their duty to ad more for entertainment and satisfaction. The vulgar, the crude, and the uncaring know no one particular political party.
