Hannah Giles Paid $50,000 to Fired San Diego ACORN Worker in Settlement Last July
News of payment follows on James O'Keefe's agreement last week to pay $100,000 to same secretly-taped former ACORN employee...

Pretend journalist and Republican activist Hannah Giles agreed to pay $50,000 to former San Diego ACORN worker Juan Carlos Vera as a part of a legal settlement struck last summer in response to an invasion of privacy lawsuit filed against her and her former partner James O'Keefe, Vera's attorney has confirmed to The BRAD BLOG.

Last week, in a scoop by the website Wonkette, it was disclosed that O'Keefe, a federal criminal and professional liar, agreed to pay $100,000 in his own legal settlement with the same former ACORN employee, after heading up the scheme to secretly videotape him in violation of California's Invasion of Privacy Act.

O'Keefe and Giles' illicit taping of Vera occurred as part of the deceptively edited series of hit videos released by the pair in 2009. The tapes were published, and paid for, by the late con-man Andrew Breitbart. Vera had been portrayed in the misleading video as having been willing to help the pair smuggle underage prostitutes into America across the Mexican border. In fact, Vera had played along with the duo's ridiculous proposed scheme only long enough to collect information from both O'Keefe and Giles, including taking their photographs, before contacting law enforcement immediately after the secretly video-taped meeting…

I'm glad she paid out something too. Now if only he could have sued Fox news and Brightbart.com for the mess in the first place.

JUanita Jean has been following this story for a long time. Hannah's grandmother is from Fort Bend County. http://juanitajean.com/2013/03/08/the-investigative-reporting-crime-syndicate/

"Dad" is Doug Giles, of RightWingNews. And I'm sure his traditional family values were passed to Hannah, and this is just another unfair assault from the "Libural" media.

what you post isn't editorializing, opinion, background, etc but News.

Priorly wrote this, rather than edit it out, leaving for clarity.

Locking, does not meet LBN SOP. Thank you.
It is not Late Breaking News but has been across the news sites for the last 4 days, as is written in your OP "Last week, in a scoop by the website Wonkette".

Also it is more commentary and would be a better fit for GD or Good Reads.

LBN has very specific rules and while this would be great to post in other forums, LBN is not the place. Thank you.

...and doing so transparently. Clearly you had misread the article originally, as it was not about the O'Keefe settlement, but about the new details of the Giles settlement which I was reporting. If the error was in any way my fault, my apologies.

As to "editorializing, opinion and background" versus "news", I find it difficult to report the news w/o also offering the appropriate background. And while my own opinions may also be contained in my breaking news stories, that is true of EVERY media outlet. But what some may refer to as "editorializing", such as calling O'Keefe a "con-man", I consider to be hard fact, but believe I have proven as much, with facts, during the course of my reporting.

In any case, I thank you again for reevaluating your original opinion and making this story available again to DU readers. I shared the news here with them before anybody else after original publication -- including my own Facebook page or even Salon (where my story has now been cross-published) -- as I've tried to do for years here whenever possible.

Too bad most of the people ACORN helped don't have that luxury. They just go to jail when they mess up.
