U.S. to bolster missile defenses to counter North Korea threat: source

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel will announce at 3 p.m. EDT on Friday a plan to bolster missile defenses in Alaska to counter the growing North Korean threat, a U.S. defense official said.

The official, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, did not offer additional details. But a top Pentagon official said on March 12 the United States had the ability to swiftly deploy up to 14 additional ground-based missile interceptors, if needed, in Alaska.

We could just build a death star and blow the rebel's (I mean Kim Jong Un) palace to bits. *joking, it would cost too much*

Actually come to think of it, it would be much more fun putting him on the moon and leaving him there with a video camera a tank of oxygen, a pound of kimchi, and a match.

(BTW I live in South Korea, hence the kimchi reference).

And George Bush's militant views on the matter drove Russia to abandon the ABM treaty as well.

Chances are one of those rockets will eventually blow up on the launch pad. North Korea is going to act insane no matter what we do. There is much more of a creditable threat against South Korea or Japan than the US.

I do agree with the one person who posted earlier in the thread that North Korea can't and shouldn't be trusted. The same goes for China.

Those that believe we should sign a peace treaty without any conditions are naive (and for clarification, I'm not talking about you).

a gamble that NK is just doing the usual spouting in regard to us over here--when a country says very clearly "We are going to nuke the US", it seems prudent to take them at least somewhat at their word, when they obviously are going through great effort and expense to develop something that will hit us. I understand China is agreeing to tighter sanctions--I hope they are trying to get a handle on this nut, instead of just waiting to see what we do (for either benign or sneaky reasons).

If I had a $1 for every time they've said that I'd be able to take a nice vacation. The US troops for the most part are south of Seoul and pretty soon all of them will be when they finish expanding Camp Humphrey (I've been on that base and they are literally expanding it by 3 times what it used to be) and then Yongsan in Seoul will be essentially closed (I have heard there will be a very small base, but most of the land is reverting back to the Korean Government).

While I can't say this for sure, I have a strong feeling there is a missile defense shield set up in Korea. If so, then it wouldn't be public knowledge.

N. Korea was a signatory of the NPT, and was engaged in serious negotiations for reunification with S. Korea. The Obama Administration should reverse these harmful policies. The Clinton Administration showed conclusively, that a softer tone and less threatening military stance, is a much more effective means of dealing with N. Korea.

13. How many lives is everyone willing to bet that NK can't hit the US?

How many cities? Are you willing to bet Seattle or LA or San Francisco or Honolulu?

Because if we're wrong and NK can hit the US that's what is going to happen. And if you are one of the dead or injured or someone who loses a loved one in such an attack, it isn't going to make you feel better when we turn NK in a radioactive wasteland, killing a lot of innocent North Koreans who had nothing to do with the attack in the first place.

Right now I think there is less then a 1% chance of NK being able to hit the US. How about a year from now? Five years from now?

As already stated above, the naval component is in service and very effective, IIRC the probability of a hit is above 90% for a single missile, with engagement doctrine being to fire 2 missiles at every inbound ICBM. The ground based component is also in service and not quite as effective with the probability of a hit above 70% for a single missile. Again 2 missiles would be fired at any single inbound target.
