(Reuters) - Joe Weider, the self-made fitness and bodybuilding guru who built a magazine empire that included more than a dozen popular publications such as Muscle and Fitness, Shape and Men's Fitness, died on Saturday at the age of 93.
Weider, also known for starting the Mr Olympia bodybuilding contest in the 1960s and mentoring a young Arnold Schwarzenegger, passed away from heart failure at a Los Angeles area hospital, his longtime publicist Charlotte Parker said.
"Joe Weider was a titan in the fitness industry and one of the kindest men I have ever met," Schwarzenegger said in a statement posted on his official website.
"He leaves behind a fantastic legacy of a fitter world," the film star and former governor of California said. "Very few people can claim to have influenced as many lives as Joe did through his magazines, his supplements, his training equipment and his big-hearted personality."

(14,020 posts)certainly testify that Joe Weider's equipment has made a big improvement in my health and the health of my family. His stuff may not be fancy - and is scoffed at by many who shill for the rich boys' toys - but his company makes decent workout tools 'for the rest of us'
Thanks Joe, and may you take a well deserved rest.

(1,489 posts)and it changed my life physically, ever since. I didnt become a giant bodybuilder, but I became as strong as i cared to be
i was surprised by the tone of it, all of these bodybuilding champions confessing their insecurities, the message being 'we did it, you can too'
very generous people
RIP, Joe
I bought his guide to bodybuilding when I was a freshman in college. I lost about 90 lbs. then put on 20 lbs. of muscle. I've been doing the same workout routine and have kept the weight off for years.

(3,411 posts)My other gramps passed at 98 after taking a fall on some wet rocks by the river while looking for a good fishing spot. Fractured a vertebrae in his neck, regained use of his limbs (paralysis from the neck down) & lived a feisty life for another 5 years after the fall. He didn't life a fitness lifestyle either.
Both were hard working Dust Bowl survivors that would have been cracking up if anyone suggested that they should follow a Weider regimen!
Sometimes it's the genes, mebbe?
I might oughta add the grammas on both sides outlived the above menfolk by several years, & they probably worked harder than their spouses!

(24,461 posts)Don't know how many times I read Muscle and Fitness in the 1980s. These methods reshaped the way I think about exercise and flexibility.
He and his magazines put me on the fitness trail. Built my lifestyle around it. Too bad he is gone.
