My home state is so regressive they'd ban fire for being too progressive if they could.

I wish I was kidding.

Thune's an empty suit who sat on his ass in the House for six years and did almost nothing. He handily beat Daschle.

South Dakota's almost a lost cause, and being from there, that kinda hurts to say.

But a Blue Dog like Herseth is probably the best we can hope for.

South Dakota features farm fields will billboards of dead fetuses.

It's also the only state to defeat medical marijuana in a popular initiative--twice!

As a South Dakota homeboy, I can say this: It's a great place to be from.

Political analysts expect Johnson's son, Brendan Johnson, who is South Dakota's U.S. attorney, to emerge as a potential Democratic candidate in the 2014 election. The younger Johnson has not announced any formal plans to seek the Senate seat.

Former Representative Stephanie Herseth Sandlin, who lost a bid for reelection in 2010, is another leading choice to run if the incumbent senator retires.
