After Plan for Speed Cameras Fails in Albany, a Tirade From Bloomberg

Source: NYT

As it became clear that a proposal to place speed-tracking cameras on New York City’s streets would fail in Albany, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg let fly a charged and unusually personal attack against state lawmakers on Wednesday, blaming state senators, by name, for the future deaths of children killed by speeding cars.

The next time that word of such a tragedy emerges, Mr. Bloomberg suggested at a news conference near Union Square, “why don’t you pick up the phone and call your state senator and ask why they allowed that child to be killed?”

He said his office would even provide contact information for certain senators: Dean G. Skelos, the Republican majority leader; Simcha Felder, who was elected as a Democrat but chose to caucus as a Republican; and Martin J. Golden, a Brooklyn Republican who has often been a crucial ally to the Bloomberg administration.

“Maybe you want to give those phone numbers to the parents of the child when a child is killed,” Mr. Bloomberg said. “It would be useful so that the parents can know exactly who’s to blame.”

What good did speeding do a rebel without a cause like James Dean?

Back in the late 1970s, a drunk driver ran a light and hit me after seeing Sinatra and Dean Martin in concert in Westchester.(NY, not in the city). Were the accident (and that was in a car prior to airbags) an inch different, wouldn't be here today. Nor would the people in my car.

as Kris Kristofferson sang "Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose" is the freedom to wail on the beach after losing everything because of ones freedom.

Freedom to drive fast with no penalty or the thought of no penalty is not freedom to those that are killed in an accident.

You mean stealing from the rich to give to the poor? Seems to me like he's simply another plutocrat on a power trip. The seventh richest man in America, supporter of brutal police tactics, defender of Citizens United and the Koch brothers, valiant destroyer of what remains of our safety net.

Somehow, I don't think Robin Hood would be responsible for this: http://www.democraticunderground.com/10022573238

It has nothing to do with guns. I'm a supporter of gun control legislation, I am not a supporter of authoritarian billionaires.

is not scapegoating. Bloomberg has done these things - supported Citizens United, encouraged and supported brutal police tactics, dismantling programs that help the most unfortunate of us.

I don't need a scapegoat, I increasingly find that it is very simple to find despicable people who do despicable t, things that greatly contribute to the evils of our society overall. What has this man accomplished that makes you so adore him? I see authoritarian beliefs and practices, I see another rich man shitting all over the poor and working class. I see a man who wants to promote and enforce authoritarian legislation that will not apply to him. Do you think those traffic cameras would hold Bloomberg responsible if his driver went too fast?

Hiding cigarettes behind curtains... banning large sugary drinks, attempting to demonize anyone who disagrees with his authoritarian point of view.

I'm all for educating about the dangers of obesity. I'm not for letting a billionaire tell us what we can eat or drink. I'm not for giving more powerful tools to a police force already absurdly corrupt and violent.

58. The billionaire angel?
Thu Mar 28, 2013, 03:26 PM
Mar 2013

As I recall, Clarence wore rags and had an ancient copy of Tom Sawyer as his only real possession beyond that. To lasso the moon was a romantic suggestion - not someone wanting to actually take the moon and put it in their backyard. George Bailey didn't want to rope the moon in, he wanted to go to college, to live an exciting life. Poor shmuck got married instead... but it is generally people like Mr. Potter and Mr. Bloomberg that force people like Mr. Bailey to work for the poor - because someone has to defend them from these predatory plutocrats.

I think it's funny that you compare Bloomberg to Clarence. Have you actually seen the movie? Clarence was a humble, funny little angel that didn't have a dollar in his pocket. Saving George was not an act of force - he jumped in so George would jump in and save him. Also note that Clarence didn't have a thing to say about sodas and tried to order an alcoholic beverage. I cannot find a single similarity between the fictional angel and the very real neo-liberal billionaire, other than the fact that they were both men.

If Bloomberg was an advocate for the poor, if he wasn't famous for actually shutting down the institutions that support them, I might have a very different opinion. Instead of tackling real issues like homelessness and poverty, he wants to stop people from drinking large sodas. Consider the prohibition, or the war on drugs. How successful were either? How successful is the war on drugs now? It is through education and legislation that promotes it, and not through force that we create progress in regards to wellness.

Yet even regarding education, your angel wants to replace public schools with charter schools. Why? Well, because there's money to be made...

you have more of a problem with drunk driving rather than the high speed limits. In case you didn't know Drunk Drivers usually don't refer to the "speed limit" and "rules of the road" when they decide to get behind the wheel drunk. I live in Texas, and I am all for the speed limit increase, there hasn't been any increase in fatalities, or wrecks as everyone has predicted, and the speed limit increases are on roads that are long, flat, and straight. Those are pretty safe to drive on. Here, you only go 85 in the left lane, if you do not feel comfortable going that fast there are slower lanes on the right...we don't seem to have all the issues everyone thought we would have.

We do overwhelmingly support UBC, what we don't like is someone like Mike telling us what size soda we can buy, that we need more surveillance cameras, ie, traffic cams, turning an out of control police force on peaceful protesters.

You may or may not approve of him, but NV. is much more different than NY and his veiws of how to run a city would be wholly unwelcome here.

I don't even know why he's targeting Sen. Heller with that ad, he does support UBC.

There are plenty of reasons for opposing speed cameras. To suggest that the people who don't support this legislation are responsible for the deaths of children is inaccurate, unfair - and overwhelmingly ignorant. There are better ways to get your point across than by misrepresenting people, making unfounded accusations - and generally acting like a talking ass.

I don't know if speed cameras are a good idea or not. I have heard that they work well in some places - and not at all in others. How would this work? You drive by... camera catches you going 30 in a 25, you get a fine? Camera catches you going 50 in a 25, you lose your license? Are we talking, primarily about school zones... or throughout the whole city?

I have never met anyone quite as eager as Bloomberg to sacrifice freedom for safety. He deserves neither.

These cameras have been repeatedly proven to cause more accidents than they prevent. There are serious questions of their basic Constitutionality.

They should be eliminated from where they exist and no new ones should be installed. They serve no valuable purpose, and act as an unquestionable accuser if you try to fight the tickets resulting from them.

A bad idea, across the board.
