Newtown school gunman had large weapons cache: court papers

Thu Mar 28, 2013 9:27am EDT

By Mary Ellen Clark

MERIDEN, Connecticut (Reuters) - The gunman who attacked a Newtown, Connecticut, elementary school in December had several additional firearms not used in the attack and hundreds of rounds of ammunition, according to court papers released on Thursday.

Connecticut officials released dozens of pages of court documents on their investigation into Adam Lanza, a 20-year old man who killed his mother, 20 first grade school children and six staff members before turning a gun on himself in the second deadliest school shooting on record in the United States.

A 90-day sealing order expired on the search warrants that were served on Lanza's home and property. The search also turned up certificates from the National Rifle Association gun-lobby group in the names of both Adam Lanza and his mother, Nancy Lanza.

The assault last December 14 at the Sandy Hook Elementary School prompted President Barack Obama to call it the worst day of his presidency and reignited a debate on gun violence in the United States. In response to the attack, the NRA called for armed guards to patrol every public school in the country.

You are required to complete a handgun safety course, which must consist of no less than the NRA's "Basic Pistol Course," prior to submitting the application.

Hissyspit posted this link downthread: http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/03/28/nra-literature-discovered-in-newtown-shooters-home/

And after reading your comment this stood out to me:

It’s still not clear whether Lanza suffered from Asbergers or a more severe form of autism. Other items seized from the home included an NRA certification for Lanza’s mother Nancy, photographs of “what appears to be a deceased human covered in plastic and what appears to be blood,” journals and drawings by Lanza, a Christmas card to Lanza from his mother containing a check for the purchase of a firearm, and a Sandy Hook report card.
Maybe he was set to turn 21 after Christmas?

What is the law in Connecticut regarding age and firearm ownership?

35. Connecticut law - Minors and Handgun Possession

Minors and Handgun Possession

State law does not set a minimum age requirement for possessing handguns. But the law (with one minor exception) prohibits transferring a handgun to anyone under age 21 (CGS § 29-34(b)). And it requires that an applicant for an eligibility certificate or gun permit be at least age 21 (CGS §§ 29-28 and 29-36f). (Federal law prohibits federal firearms licensees (FFLs) from transferring handguns to anyone under age 21. It, with exceptions, prohibits nondealer transfers to, and possession by, people under age 18. But the state's 21-year age requirement for transfers supersedes this federal provision.)

Lanza could have purchased the gun legally (in this case with money from his mother) but could not apply for a eligibility certificate until he was 21?

Am I understanding this correctly?

43. I don't understand the way the law is written
Thu Mar 28, 2013, 03:00 PM
Mar 2013

What I see is that there is nothing preventing a minor from owning a gun, but he can't get a permit and no one can transfer a gun to him until he is 21. I don't see a legal way for a minor to get a gun.

But if their parent allows them free access to the parent's guns, I guess that is moot.

Parents allowing their minor children, especially those with "issues", from using their guns. Personally, I am not in favor of even SPOUSES being able to be given gun gifts without background checks or using their spouses guns. Been there, done that, and raised the roof on this issue with my NRA husband.

That we started tracking ammunition sales along with
internet purchases of magazines, body armor and other tactical
gear sold both locally and through the internet?

Seems to me that if we had such records, the FBI could flag special
excessive purchases for special review. Who knows, it might have helped
prevent some of the mass shootings we've had since the
assault weapons ban expired.

A weapon is harmless if you don't have ammo or high capacity
clips easily available.

Surprised? Why is this fact an important topic for a news story? I'd just assumed that mom was an NRA member. Whether they were members of NRA, or cub scouts, or Hair Club for Men seems irrelevant to the important facts of the horrific crime. I'm sorry if I'm offending anyone by not seeing the importance of the NRA membership/certificates.

To me, the lack of a certificate for involuntarily hospitalizing the young man is a much more important facet of the story. But I still have to have my 2nd cup of coffee, so will continue to ponder.

If someone commits a crime using a weapon or bullet, the seller/dealer/manufacturer should get 10% of the criminal sentence the gunslinger gets

If its 25 years, then a gun seller/dealer/manufacturer should get 2.5 years of hard time

Because when one wins a lottery, the seller automatically gets 10%.

Same bonanza should apply

For a woman who had so much, including money, education...what the fuck was she thinking?
That's like giving your kids drugs if they have a drug problem.

Would you go out and buy an arsenal if you had a troubled teen/young adult male?

What laws? As far as I know, guns are a dime a dozen in any state and laws don't exist at gun shows.

She followed the loose gun laws - woop dee do.
