CDC Confirms Multistate E. coli Outbreak from Farm Rich Products

Source: Food Safety News

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service has posted a distribution list of where affected products were sent. That list includes Wal Mart stores nationwide, Winn-Dixie stores in Florida, and a variety of retailers in Michigan.

At least 24 people in 15 states have fallen ill with E. coli O121 in an outbreak traced back to Farm Rich brand frozen pizzas, quesadillas, philly cheese steaks and mozzarella bites, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed, following initial reports Thursday evening.

Seven people have been hospitalized in connection to the products, which were sold nationwide. One patient has developed hemolytic uremic syndrome.

E coli is killed with sufficient temperature. Folks must only be "warming" their factory-produced food, instead of fully cooking/baking it.

But E-Coli can become heat resistant and a sustained temperature of 165 will be needed.

The food is precooked, just heating it is part of the convenience.

I need to clarify, cheese is the common ingredient in the recalled foods that most likely carried the E-Coli.

have stopped selling sprouts, all kinds, clover, alfalfa, etc because they believe there is a high danger of e coli

to grow your own sprouts... a mason jar with ring lid, piece of cheesecloth or similar and some seeds (or mung beans for bean sprouts). Just add water, rinse daily and you have the freshest sprouts to be found and no worries of ecoli. I do it and it is pretty inexpensive.

We need to get used to not having every fresh food item in our local stores since that trend will soon be going away.

Start here: Men who eat a typical western diet are about 100 times more likely to die of prostate cancer than a Chinese farmer who eats little meat, no dairy, and lots of veggies.
