The Internal Revenue Service says Boston-area taxpayers need time to finish their tax returns without worry.
Noting the tragedy of the explosions Monday at the Boston Marathon that killed two and injured more than 100, the IRS said it will be providing individual tax filing and payment extensions. Details will be announced Tuesday.

(94,592 posts)Okay, I know nobody wants to be insensitive. But am I to assume you didn't file before today, and you were standing at the finish line with the forms in your pocket in the middle of the afternoon?

(130,964 posts)Now won't want to check my account balance! Silly, I know I can/have covered the checks, but just HATE this! and I don't begrudge the Feds or the State, they're entitled; hell, I was a fed employee for 20+ years, and much of my income is from Feds.

I filed yesterday. Or at least I mailed the checks. Damn accountant better have e-filed or I'll sue him.
Isn't it archaic that we still mail checks?

(30,884 posts)so yes, there are probably last minute filers who didn't get around to it today. It's probably not a large number of people affected by this.

(9,893 posts)I mean, isn't this why you don't do things at the last minute? Because shit happens? I've never had any sympathy for people who can't seem to get things done until one minute after the deadline. Pisses me off when they get special treatment, because I've known too many of them. And I'm not talking extenuating circumstances, like a tornado blew your house away in mid-March.

(30,884 posts)You do realize that some people complete the paperwork early but wait to file because they owe money, right? Or that they're waiting for mandatory documentation before filing? That they may have had to make the last minute decision to file an extension because they didn't have all the necessary info?

(46,192 posts)post offices in many areas have special dropoffs exclusively for this purpose.
where there are local holidays in DC, the tax deadline is pushed back for them.
if you think this government should penalize and go after people who filed on April 16th in the Boston area, knock yourself out --your idea is so bad that it would cost us more money than it would gain us.
