(Oscar) Grant case cop charged with jobless fraud
Source: San Francisco Chronicle
A former BART police officer who was fired for his role in the New Year's Day 2009 shooting of unarmed train rider Oscar Grant has been charged with fraudulently collecting thousands of dollars in unemployment benefits.
BART fired Anthony Pirone in early 2010 after investigating the way he aggressively detained Grant at Fruitvale Station in Oakland before a second officer shot Grant in the back while trying to arrest him.
Pirone, 41, started collecting unemployment checks soon after losing his job, and continued to do so in the last eight months of 2011 even though he had joined the Army and was working in the service full-time, Alameda County prosecutors say.
They charged Pirone on April 9 with grand theft and making false statements on claim forms, both felonies. However, Pirone was deployed to Afghanistan last month, records show, and the case was put on hold until his return.
