NYT: Obama’s ‘Red Line’ Comment ‘Unscripted’

Source: TPM/NYT

PEMA LEVY 10:53 AM EDT, SUNDAY MAY 5, 2013

When President Obama promised that the use of chemical weapons in Syria would cross a "red line" that would "change my calculations," he was going further than many of his advisers wanted or even expected by pledging the further involvement in the conflict should chemical weapons be used, the New York Times reported Sunday.

“The idea was to put a chill into the Assad regime without actually trapping the president into any predetermined action,” said one senior official, who, like others, discussed the internal debate on the condition of anonymity. But “what the president said in August was unscripted,” another official said. Mr. Obama was thinking of a chemical attack that would cause mass fatalities, not relatively small-scale episodes like those now being investigated, except the “nuance got completely dropped.”

Months later, after reports that chemical weapons have been used on a small scale, the administration appears to be moving toward providing lethal weapons to the Syrian rebels.

2. That Assad had crossed a "red line" was a fiction created by Israeli intel

and a way to box the Obama Administration into a preset course of action leveraging the US into military intervention by increments. And, it appears to be working.

Israeli spy says Syria used chemical arms, U.S. unconvinced
ReutersBy Maayan Lubell | Reuters – Tue, Apr 23, 2013

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Syrian government forces have used chemical weapons - probably nerve gas - in their fight against rebels trying to force out President Bashar al-Assad, the Israeli military's top intelligence analyst said on Tuesday.

The assessment met with skepticism from the United States, which has declared any use of chemical weapons in Syria's two-year-old civil war a "red line" that could trigger intervention.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said he spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the latter "was not in a position to confirm" the briefing given by Itai Brun, a military intelligence brigadier-general, at a Tel Aviv conference.

"I don't know what the facts are," Kerry told reporters in Brussels.

Netanyahu's office declined comment on Kerry and Brun's remarks, made a day after U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said while visiting Israel that Washington's spy agencies were still assessing whether such weapons had been employed.

"To the best of our understanding, there was use of lethal chemical weapons. Which chemical weapons? Probably sarin," Brun told Tel Aviv University's Institute for National Security Studies in the most definitive Israeli statement on the issue.

Then that was followed by this one from May 1st:

Haaretz

Former Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi told CNN's Christiane Amanpour in a rare interview aired Tuesday that once it can be confidently determined the Assad regime is responsible for chemical weapons use in Syria not responding will send "the wrong message."

"Doing nothing, it's not an option," he said. When asked about his professional recommendation he suggested "trying to help the opposition in a more concrete way, like providing them, instead of non-lethal assistance…weapons, maybe to impose a no-fly zone, at least on part of Syria."

Before any action, however, he said "it should be very clear that was aware of it and he was part of it."

4. “If he drops sarin on his own people, what’s that got to do with us?”

And that goes to the heart of the argument.

WHO THE FUCK CARES WHAT ASSAD DOES TO HIS OWN PEOPLE? We have problems of our own to deal with.

Mr. Obama’s advisers also raised legal issues. “How can we attack another country unless it’s in self-defense and with no Security Council resolution?” another official said, referring to United Nations authorization. “If he drops sarin on his own people, what’s that got to do with us?”

When do we learn to mind our own FUCKING business?

The US shouldn't get too involved only monitor it (drones). Assad graduated as a doctor and studied in London. He should have remained in medicine.

a huge deal - that is until the President of the United States made it so by defining it as a red line.

It's too bad that there were those in his own administration undermining him and advocating for war.

That said, US actions have been unhelpful in finding a political solution to Syria's internal war. Indeed, the US promoted armed struggle at every turn rather than urge both sides to dialogue unconditionally: without the condition to disarm, step down, or what have you.

Here's another video of the bombing. There's a delay of about 20 seconds from the light of the blast to its sound. Sound travels about 1,000 feet per second, indicating the blast was 4 miles away from the camera. Pretty loud for that distance. Explosions went on for hours (see video in post #10), indicating that what was hit had quite a lot of ordinance there. This was more than just a "research center." These were missiles stored there that were going off. But of course, pay no attention to the videos. It was all Israel's fault for targeting a nice friendly little research center.

"Rebels, opposition activists and residents said the strikes hit bases of the elite Republican Guard and storehouses of long-range missiles, in addition to a military research center that American officials have called the country’s main chemical weapons facility."
