ARK. TREASURER ACCUSED OF TAKING CASH FROM BROKER
Source: Associated Press
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) Arkansas' state treasurer was accused Monday of taking at least $36,000 in cash sometimes stashed in a pie box from a broker who later came to manage a large share of the state's $3.3 billion stock and bond portfolio.
Martha Shoffner made her initial federal court appearance Monday and was released on her own recognizance. She was also ordered to surrender her passport.
Federal prosecutors allege Shoffner accepted $12,000 a year from a broker who would sometimes deliver cash in a pie box, pie included. The broker is cooperating with investigators.
Shoffner, a Democrat, told reporters outside the courthouse Monday that she does not intend to resign. She was re-elected in 2010 and has faced inquiries over the past year about the way her office has handled state investments.

(10,559 posts)This was/is a big discussion in another thread.
It is annoying to those of us who see "all caps" as YELLING in net-speak, but the poster is doing the right thing.

(55,011 posts)if it were some fast breaking thing or just one or two words it wouldn't be anywhere near as irritating and rude as full lines of caps.
and when someone just digs in when asked nicely, and then does it again right away, you can see clearly they are just being an asshole - not refering to this OP, rather the accuracy-avoiding, attention-seeking, fear-mongering Don Quixotes from the East County Magazine.

(10,559 posts)I answered the poster's question; the headline is copied (check the link) word for word, and it HAPPENS to be in all caps. If the mods cared, there would be a "proper case" feature automatically fixing things. There isn't. In the grand scheme of things, this is NOTHING, but some folk enjoy creating drama (and since the trouble makers are being ignored, the source of the UGLY is pretty obvious - and SHE isn't it).
Please take your complaints about the other thread back to it; I am NOT interested (although it was funny as anything when "someone else did it" and the Attack Brigade didn't go off on them - the politics of personality are strong sometimes).
Like I said: whatever.

(2,840 posts)in the November election. In that "more than a year" period when she was being investigated, the Legislature was majority Democratic.
This isn't a politically motivated hatchet job. Gov. Beebe, Att'y Gen. McDaniel, U.S. Sen. Pryor, gubernatorial candidates Bill Halter and Mike Ross, all Democrats, as well as the chairman of the Arkansas Democratic Party, are all calling on Shoffner to resign.

In any case, see Seeking Serenity's post below.

I'm glad she's gone. She was a poor treasurer.

(27,247 posts)and deserved to be forced to resign (although I don't see how the Feds decided on charging her with "extortion" , I have a bad feeling about the political ramifications of this, considering how the state has increasingly been turning Republican.
