Publicist: Founding member of The Doors dies at 74 (Manzarek)
Source: AP
Ray Manzarek, a founding member of The Doors whose versatile and often haunting keyboards complimented Jim Morrison's gloomy baritone and helped set the mood for some of rock's most enduring songs, has died. He was 74.
Manzarek died Monday in Rosenheim, Germany, surrounded by his family, said publicist Heidi Robinson-Fitzgerald. Robinson-Fitzgerald said his manager, Tom Vitorino, confirmed Manzarek died after being stricken by bile duct cancer.
The Doors' original lineup, which also included drummer John Densmore and guitarist Robbie Krieger, was only together for a few years. But the band has retained a large and obsessive following decades after Morrison's death, in 1971.
The Doors have sold more than 100 million records and songs such as "Light My Fire" and "Riders On the Storm" are still "classic" rock standards. For Doors admirers, the band symbolized the darker side of the Los Angeles lifestyle, what happened to the city after the sun went down and the Beach Boys fans headed home.

(5,734 posts)My cousin's wife just died from it. They had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Dec. 22, and she seemed to be in great health - always athletic and active. She became suddenly ill in January and was diagnosed with bile duct cancer. She underwent heroic surgery and seemed to be making a rapid recovery, then went downhill within days. Never recovered. We lost her in early March. Massive shock to the family, especially to her children and grandchildren, and her poor husband. They were so very close.
If his disease followed this course, there was little or no time to let the public know.

Edit: This was meant as a single post and not a reply. My bad.

(23,867 posts)I met someone years ago who was a relative of his, and was there the day they named the band. Interesting stories.
And the jukebox at the pizza place played Light My Fire, back in the 60's.
A very interesting keyboard player.

I still have my ticket stubb, believe it or not. Maybe I held onto it, knowing how good the music and the times were then.

(4,104 posts)I saw them in concert 46 years ago today, May 20, 1967. It was at Birmingham High School in Van Nuys, CA, where I was a senior. Believe it or not, the headline group was Jefferson Airplane. As soon as The Doors finished their set, 1/3 of the stadium emptied out to follow The Doors to the Whiskey A Go Go, where The Doors were playing later that night.
Where did all the years go?
RIP Ray....

At this point, who knows? The intarwebz have made fact and fiction very closely-intertwined companions, haven't they?

The website mediamass.net
The website mediamass.net is the medium of our satire to expose with humour, exaggeration and ridicule the contemporary mass production and mass consumption that we observe
Also it will not only mock the procuders (mainstream media, journalists) as it is common when questioning and criticizing mass media, but also the consumers as one cannot exist without the other. Sensationalism, lack of verification of information, ethics and standards issues are only symptoms of the actual social and economic order. This is particularly obvious when observing the role of social networking sites in spreading rumours.

"I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of my friend and bandmate Ray Manzarek today," said Doors guitarist Robby Krieger. "I'm just glad to have been able to have played Doors songs with him for the last decade. Ray was a huge part of my life and I will always miss him."
Manzarek is survived by his brothers Rick and James, his wife Dorothy, his son Pablo, and three grandchildren. Instead of flowers, the family's asked that a donation be made in Manzarek's name at www.standup2cancer.org.
