Coburn Calls Tornado Aid Debate ‘Typical Washington B.S.’

Source: TPM

-snip-

During an appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," Coburn boasted about his consistency on the issue, saying that he helped ensure that relief provided after the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing was offset. Pointing to what he characterized as "$200 billion worth of waste, fraud and duplication," he expressed disdain for lawmakers who borrow money to provide disaster aid.

"So it's morally wrong, it's repugnant to me and it's the lamest excuse career politicians can use, and that's why our country is in trouble. That kind of thinking," Coburn said.

But the conservative senator argued that any debate over spending offsets is motivated by politics, saying that the Federal Emergency Management Agency has a $11.6 billion fund it could use to help victims of the Oklahoma tornado. For that reason, Coburn said, it's unlikely that Congress would even need to pass a bill to provide aid to his state.

"This is all a game and it's a crass political game because I was being asked these questions before we even pulled the dead people out of the rubble," Coburn said. "So it's just typical Washington B.S., quite frankly."

He knows there happens to be enough money left in the kitty to cover the needs of his constituents without needing to make an additional appropriation. How convenient for him. Those poor suckers who have to deal with floods or earthquakes or hurricanes or massive wild fires etc. down the line when the pot is empty after his state gets what it needs now are just out of luck.

funding it! So when another tornado hits Illinois or Missouri, they can grandstand again against all that 'pork'!

"Mr Coburn and James Inhofe both voted in September 2011 against a bill to provide $7 billion to help finance the Federal Emergency Management Agency's relief fund. Mr Coburn had unsuccessfully sought to reduce other federal programmes to pay for it. He and Mr Inhofe also voted against a $60.2 billion aid plan for victim of Superstorm Sandy earlier this year. "

If Coburn wants to put ideological purity in the way of aid for desperate people in his state, let's do it: no aid to the folks in Oklahoma until the budget is fine-tuned to Coburn's exacting standards, however the hell long it takes (Peter King, are you listening?).

One thing I noticed about Coburn's appearance this morning: it looked like he hadn't slept in a couple of days. I'm hoping the smug bastard has a lot of sleepless nights in his future.

Modern conservatism is an abstract academic exercise that fails whenever it is put to a real-world test. So they get angry when they have to stand amongst the rubble of their "ideas" with the cameras on.

of recorded history's "worst natural disasters."
We have caused so much destruction to our planet and ecosystem that our world must try and cleanse itself of the wounds.
Each disaster will worsen. It may be too late to restore balance in nature. If not, it will take many years of real work to possibly have an inhabitable planet for future generations.
IMO, we haven't seen anything yet.

Not by a long shot, as there's been DOZENS of tornadoes that have been more violent and killed far more people, than the 24 who died thanks to the 210-mph twister in Moore on Monday, as bad as that may have been, And your opinion that EVERY disaster will worsen or that "we haven't seen anything yet", is just that, an opinion, and nothing more.

Yes, AGW is an issue, and YES, we need to keep working on it. But if I may be allowed, the mass media has GOT to stop sensationalizing shit so much every time something like this happens. It may be good for ratings, but it is BAD for everything else, including helping people to understand the reality of climate change.

When our elected Reprsentatives seem to prosper and thrive on spewing BS to "We the People," who gave them the job to Repesent "We," devote all of their time and our money on doing absolutely nothing and all of their time on gotcha scandals. Coburn along with his fellow D.C. Cohorts lack integrity, and are so spineless that they can only survive by totally agreeing and fully supporting each other to the detriment of those that elected them.

Many supporters of the BS'ers, are of the belief that their Reps are more educated and smarter than they and fail to realize that their Reps are just simply better BS'er.

You're a hypocrite. You voted for the wars Bushco told lies to start, and didn't insist on any offsets at that time. You didn't seem to care what they were going to cost in the end, or how we were going to pay for them.

YOU are what is wrong with Washington. YOU are part of the problem.
